Repeatedly submitting abuse reports when you disagree

Posted on 11/04/2004 9:08:17 AM PST by Admin Moderator

Hello.

Over the past hour or so, there have been individuals who have hit abuse dozens upon dozens of times, sometimes for the very same thing they had previously hit abuse on.

Please do not do this. It is highly annoying.

I am aware that there are about 10 threads on Arafat dying. I made the decision that I was not going to pull all of them. I did not want to lose the first few comments made on them, and besides, the explosion of threads on FR when something big happens is somewhat of a tradition. I'll be pulling new threads, at least the new ones that do not have actual real articles associated, but the ones that were up will remain up.

If you don't agree with this policy, I am sorry and I did hear your complaints. If Jim wants the approach taken changed, he'll let us know. But one person hitting abuse 5 or 6 times on the same thread saying "duplicate, please pull" is just being a pest.

Also, about the CBS/not-dead thread. If CBS is reporting that, it is news regardless of if CBS has the story right or wrong. If they have it right, then it is news about Arafat. If they have it wrong, then it is news about CBS. Either way, I am not taking that thread down. Besides, it was a missed opportunity when the abuse report came in "He's dead." The correct abuse report should have been, "He's dead, Jim."

Thanks, AM

Excellent advice. I use "search" and this link

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/my/review

Whenever I'm looking for the top stories.

Of course, I subscribe to about 17 topics so my "Review/Headlines" page is quite full.

How about pulling all the one line vanities that clog up the main forum? The vast majority of them are unnecessary.

Not meaning to tell you how to do your job, O Great and Powerful Bearer of the Ring of ZOT, but perhaps the dups should be locked with links leading to one consolidated thread.

Now THAT is one heck of a good idea!
You could use that same protocol for the 19 threads that pop up each week when Ann Coulter's latest column is published. Same for Steyn and VDH.

Just for the record, I have hit the, "Abuse," button once; on myself, in the last almost 4 years.
For a post being all skrooed up.

I did not hit the "Abuse" button either and I'm feeling kind of left out.

I'm proud to say that I have never hit the abuse button on anyone over the past few years. Even trolls.

Not hitting the abuse button when it needs to be hit is abuse.

Question: What is the policy on vanity "Arafat is dead" threads -- threads without links?

The least they could do would be to phrase things a bit more politely and humbly:

"Do you think this duplicate thread should be pulled? Thank you so much and thank you for your hard work as a VOLUNTEER moderator."

Do people really use such imperious tones when they request assistance?

Loud, RINO Freepers who post all day, who ping people to their hyper-controlled threads, but never show up at any of the FReeps to do the dirty work, even though they are perfectly healthy, are an EXCEPTION to all rules on FR.

(Great run on sentence, eh?)

If you're really going to channel the Comma Queen properly, you have to misspell several words in that run-on sentence.
It conveys that butt-glued-to-chair, spittle-flecked-monitor, 83-posts-per-hour mental image I have of her so well!

(Pinging Xenalyte 'cause I know she'll appreciate your post above.)

"I'm hitting Abuse."

"And I'm hitting "Abuse" to report your abuse of the "Abuse" button."

And I'm looking for the Antabuse.

Yer all a bunch of maroons!

Man I got banned for about 5 minutes because I think someone thought the post I made was from me or I broke a rule somehow.

I thought I was gonna cry or start talking to those angry invisible liberals who aren't really in my room again. I will be good I promise and try to make my posts less bannable!

I am one of the ones who hit the abuse link. If there are multiple threads on the same subject, then the threads lose focus and posters may miss valuable information. I understand your frustration and respect your decision but think that server performance and keeping the discussion focused should be factored into the decision.

IMHO having to read in just about every message some little snide remark about how everything isn't done just perfectly is pretty obnoxious in it's self.  Frankly, many mistakes are entertaining, much more entertaining than listening to the school teacher's dictates.

What you and those like you who get into huffs because of duplicate threads or whatever; are really about as rude and boring as going around and pointing out spelling errors and punctuation corrections.

Instead of posting a whine about how this or that is a duplicate thread or what ever isn't up to your standards, simple post a link to the other thread.

The 'free' in freerepublic is not about control freaks.

Threads without links, or wrong links should be deleted, banished.
