A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.
A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day was introduced on June 24, 2002. It's only a small room in JimRob's house where we can get to know one another a little better; salute and support our military and our leaders; pray for those in need; and congratulate those deserving. We strive to keep our threads entertaining, fun, and pleasing to look at, and often have guest writers contribute an essay, or a profile of another FReeper.
On Mondays please visit us to see photos of A FEW OF FR'S VETERANS AND ACTIVE MILITARY
If you have a suggestion, or an idea, or if there's a FReeper you would like to see featured, please drop one of us a note in FR mail.
We're having fun and hope you are!

No Gloating, Please!

by JohnHuang2

I admit it's tempting, deliciously tempting, especially after a grueling campaign as this, but I won't. Instead, I'm going to be magnanimous. In other words, if you're looking for gloating, you're looking in the wrong place. From published reports, I gather the White House has adopted a similar No-Gloat approach, and I think that's a good thing. Some of you might not agree -- what's wrong with a little gloating? -- but I think we've got to be bigger than that. In short,
stay above-the-fray.
That's why you won't hear a peep from me about Bush's victory Tuesday, not a word on how Bush successfully beat back challenger John Kerry. That's according to a poll of over 110 million registered voters conducted Tuesday. The Democrats' inability to unseat the President -- despite having poured unprecedented amounts of money and manpower in their hopeless effort to topple the wartime leader -- must be quite a bitter pill to swallow. But, as I said, nary a word about it from me.
Here's what else my lips are sealed -- tightly sealed -- about: President Bush's very long coattails. On Tuesday, Republicans expanded their majority in Congress to 233 House seats, keeping the chamber in GOP hands for the sixth straight election. As for the Senate, more good news (which I refuse to mention). The GOP swept all five Democrat Southern seats -- South Carolina, North Carolina, Louisiana, Florida, and Georgia, crippling Democrats for years to come, but I'm not gonna gloat about that either.
I suppose I could gloat about the stunning Senate upset in South Dakota (but I won't). Not since Barry Goldwater's famed 1952 victory over Ernest McFarland had a Senate leader been toppled. Tom Daschle got his walking papers Tuesday, losing his bid for a fourth term to former GOP Congressman John Thune, but -- again -- you won't hear me gloat about it, or even mention it once. My lips are totally sealed.
Look at it this way: If I were gloating, wouldn't I mention how Bush is the first President in 16 years to win a majority of the popular vote? Wouldn't I be pointing out that Bush got nearly 4 million more votes than Kerry nation-wide? Clinton never got a majority of the popular vote, garnering just 43% in '92 and 49% in '96. Indeed, Bush got more votes than Clinton ever dreamed of getting. Of course I haven't mentioned any of this, nor will I; this is no time to gloat.

Oh, remember the torrent of media stories that angry voters in Florida, bent on revenge for 2000, were champing at the bit to even the score in 2004? Needless to say, there was little evidence of it Tuesday, much to media chagrin -- but I'm not gonna mention that either.
And if you thought I'd gloat about how wrong exit polling was Tuesday, you're mistaken. In fact, I won't even mention how an early batch had Bush losing in Florida, Ohio, North Carolina, you name it. I haven't gloated to date, and I'm not about to start now.
Oh, one more thing...
Congratulations, Mr. President!!! ;-)
And God bless the United States of America.
Anyway, that's...
My two cents

"Retronyms"

Read: John 3:1-17

Do not marvel that I said to you, "You must be born again." —John 3:7

Bible In One Year: Jeremiah 32-33; Hebrews 1

What do regular coffee, acoustic guitars, and black-and-white television have in common? All are what journalist Frank Mankiewicz calls "retronyms"—words or phrases created because a familiar word needs to be distinguished from a term that refers to a new development or invention.

Once, all coffee was regular, all guitars were acoustic, and all TVs were black and white. Not so today, thus the need for a growing list of retronyms, including decaf mocha java, electric guitar, and high-def television.

It could be said that Jesus turned the phrase physical birth into a retronym when He told an inquiring man named Nicodemus, "Unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God" (John 3:3).

Nicodemus was a religious person who didn't grasp the idea of second birth. "How can a man be born when he is old?" he asked Jesus. "Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?" (v.4). Jesus further explained the difference between being born of the flesh and being born of the Spirit, then concluded, "Do not marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born again'" (v.7).

Our Christian life begins when we invite Jesus to live within us. It's a miracle! We're born again. —David McCasland

Rejoice, O soul, the debt is paid,
For all our sins on Christ were laid;
We've been redeemed, we're justified—
And all because the Savior died. —D. De Haan

Natural life came by God's breath; eternal life comes by Christ's death.

I'm glad Dennis Miller can hang in there supporting our president in the liberal world he works and lives in. He's a brave man.

Our fervent petitions were heard by a merciful Father, and we every day must proceed with praise and thanks to Him, and a renewed determination and effort to take back our America from those who have been destroying it.

Well said Lady, I feel the same way.
That's such a beautiful graphic!
