The Republican expected to chair the Senate Judiciary Committee next year bluntly warned newly re-elected President Bush on Wednesday against putting forth Supreme Court nominees who would seek to overturn abortion rights or are otherwise too conservative to win confirmation.

PA went for Kerry! Why should we reward their senator with a high profile chairmanship!

Can't we even have 24 hours without being told we're right-wing Christian reactionaries?
Bush has his mandate -- Judeo-Christian "moral issues."
This election was historic. And the President, Senate, House, Governors and Supreme Court will hopefully pay close attention to the will of the people.
The conservative, right-wing, Christian people.

Bush should keep on nominating whomever he wants. The stonewalling by the Dim minority through the use of the filibuster suggests that it's time for recall campaigns against the bastards who have blocked many judicial appointments these past three+ years. All we need are the signatures to force the issue, and viable candidates to replace the bastards.

I voted a straight R ticket, but I was very fastidious about it, and took special care to avoid the lever by that man's name. And he's going to dictate terms to George W. Bush?

I think Spector doesn't understand who won the mandate--and why.

This will infuriate me. I did not work this hard to be derailed by a Republican.
I will know the fix is in if the Senate does not propose as an initial act of a new Senate a rules change on cloture that removes from Pres. appointments the possibility of filibuster.

"He apparently has, because I doubt you can name any of the hundreds of judges he's nominated that hasn't been stellar." Since I haven't studied the "hundreds of judges he's nominated" (and neither, I am sure, have you), this statement is meaningless.
"So, yes, that is the intelligent approach."
Sorry, but not for the Supreme Court. Nominees for THAT court need to be drawn from judges with a known track record of strict constructionism. One "Souter" is sufficient to invalidate the approach.

re:"Pat Buchanan just said on Hardball that the Republican party is going downhill and is losing its constituency. He said the strength of the Republican party started under Nixon, peaked with Reagan and has gone down hill since then. Then he intimates that with Bush it is going over the cliff and will basically be gone after 2008."
Buchanan is the one that has been going down hill ever since. I'm afraid he's joined the ranks of those who never really do anything, they just complain and rant. He just needs to go on vacation and enjoy the rest of his life.

Bush and Santorum backed this RINO, Spector, instead of Toomey who lost; Spector won and the very next day he was bashing President Bush. Let's not repeat this mistake again. That means we should not provide aid and comfort to pro-abortion RINOs like Guiliani and Schwarzenegger.
You can't trust any man who refuses to prevent the slaughter of defenseless babies.

Why Santorum and Bush thought loyalty in the primary to this backstabbing traitorous Republican, over a loyal, honest, Conserative Republican like Toomey, was GOOD POLITICS is just beyond me. Yup. It's time for a RINO purge.
It's also time for a pro-life litmus test for SCOTUS nominees. If Kerry can advocate a pro-death litmus test, then we sure as hell can advocate a pro-life litmust test.
The cowardice on the part of the Republican party makes me sick!

His feet better be held to the fire, and he should be thankful Bush campaigned on his behalf and got him re-elected.

Specter also bemoaned what he called the lack of any current justices comparable to legal heavyweights Must be nice to consider one's self competent to make this judgement. I suppose Specter thinks he is a legal heavyweight passing judgement on legal lightweights.
It's like calling someone a thinking person...You assign yourself the position of being able to judge thinking people. A truly superior position to be in I suppose.

That's just a simple fact of the matter. Don't misunderstand, I like Toomey, but he wouldn't have won in a state that pulled the lever for Kerry.
