It's Official - The South Won the Civil War!
11-3-04 | Always Right

Posted on 11/03/2004 8:24:39 AM PST by Always Right

My history books said the south lost the Civil War, but apparently that was just a battle. The south lost the battle of 1861-1865, but now are winning the war.

Excuse the map, I could not find one that had all the states colored in.

The South CONTROLS the GOP now. Better get used to it Yankee!

It's still The Party of Lincoln. Better get used to it, Reb.

Both of whom were proud to be members of The Party of Lincoln.

And both of whom had political beliefs that were exactly opposite of Lincoln's on virtually every issue.

TAXES:
Reagan/Goldwater - favored massive income tax cuts
Lincoln - favored massive tariff hikes and the first income tax

MONETARY POLICY:
Reagan/Goldwater - Free-market/monetarist persuasion
Lincoln - interventionist fiat money manager

WELFARE HANDOUTS:
Reagan/Goldwater - opposed welfare handouts
Lincoln - favored massive land giveaways to the poor

GOVERNMENT PROJECTS:
Reagan/Goldwater - opposed wasteful big government spending
Lincoln - favored "internal improvement" pork barrel expenditures

TRADE:
Reagan/Goldwater - free market and free trade
Lincoln - heavy protectionism

ECONOMICS: Reagan/Goldwater - guided by Adam Smith, the Austrian school, and the marginal theory of pricing
Lincoln - guided by Henry Carey, Hamilton, and the marxist labor theory of value

GOVERNMENT STRUCTURE:
Reagan/Goldwater - favored the restoration of state federalism and state's rights
Lincoln - the great centralizer

If they have room for the likes of you, Pea, then they have plenty of room for people like me. No matter how long it took you to come over to our side.

Lincoln's dead and his state just gave us a senator whose name and politics rhyme with Osama. We're in control and have been since you jumped ship in '64. Better get used to it, yankee

Give it up. If you don't like the name then there's always the Southern Party.

There, there, there. You want to pretend you invented the Republican Party? Go right ahead. Just resign yourself that you are members of The Party of Lincoln. Nothing is going to change that. If you can't stomach that, well, like I said. There's always the Southern Party.

I have no problem with the name today. You do know that it's called the "Republican Party," don't you? There is no such organization called the "Party of Lincoln" though I suppose you're free to start one if you like. Maybe you can dress up in a stovepipe hat and put on a fake beard over your patchy scruff and run for president on it's ticket in 08.

Just resign yourself that you are members of The Party of Lincoln.

Thanks but no thanks. Your mythical third party, The "Party of Lincoln," has but one voter: you. I'm content to let it stay that way.

Yeah, you're in charge all right.

Fiscal Policy:
Reagan/Goldwater - favored fiscal responsiblity and a balanced budget.
Bush - favored massive increases in deficit spending

Government Philosophy:
Reagan/Goldwater - Believed in smaller government
Bush - favors massive new entitlements

Trade:
Reagan/Goldwater - free market and free trade
Bush - talks free trade put is quick on the tariff trigger when it suits him

Government Structure:
Reagan/Goldwater - favored the restoration of state federalism and state's rights
Bush - believes in government intervention over states rights through Constitutional Amendment, federal legislation, and regulation

And the one common feature between the three?

Reagan/Goldwater: Proud members of The Party of Lincoln.
Bush: Proud member of The Party of Lincoln.

At least there's that.

Last time I checked, on Tuesday night it had 59.3 million voters. Give or take you and your buddies.

Anyone who puts down the south on Free Republic, historically or otherwise had better be darn glad for the open-minded consistency of this patriotic region. Try running this election in the states that comprised the US during the Civil War if you want.

Southerners are common sense patriots. Zell Miller and Richard Shelby are the prototypes. Shelby was elected in the last Democrat southern landslide back in 86 and has switched parties.

The south is the best integrated, least racially torn region of the country. My people are spread out from NC, to GA, ALA, MS, and LA. My father moved our tribe to AZ and we have a western version out here, very patriotic, and mindful of our family tree.

Our attitude is characterized by the crossed American and much maligned confederate battle flags.

For any one with the least snobbism towards the south, I say, try winning an election without us. Those northerners are real numbskulls.

I use "conservative" in the traditional sense. Calhoun proposed radical ideas and interpretations of the Constitution, which included things like "nullification" and "concurrent majorities." There is nothing conservative about that.

I could just as easily argue that modern conservatism = western. Ronald Reagan and Barry Goldwater were leaders in the modern conservative movement known as the "Sagebrush rebellion."

I've really been perplexed all along that so many people hate Bush, particularly in the "Old Northern" states. It bothers me that the South has such a huge relative advantage in armed forces service.

I almost feel that so many northeasterners just couldn't bear to vote Bush because of the Texas twang thing. New Jersey was OK to vote for Reagan=landslide in 1984 because he had this neutral American accent.

I think this "South Rulez GOP" too far. You can write any book with a premise like this and stretch it completely beyond recognition, like the guy who wrote "How the Irish Saved Civilization" or a more recent "How the Scots Invented the Modern World". Koreans are particularly good at this type of thought. In my experience they have a lot of similarities to Japanese and Chinese, though they think they are better than both.

One thing we can agree on is that the South is completely different from what it was in 1860, and is even barely recognizable from what it was in 1960 (the lack of recognition of these changes by non-Southerners is part of the Democrats' problem).

One of the best things the South has preserved over the past 150 years is a *relatively* strong Christian faith, IMHO.

This isn't about the Civil War and the original poster was just having a good time. The fact of the matter is that the south provided 161 of 270 the electoral votes needed.

The population shift to states like Florida, Georgia and North Carolina have made the south more important than ever. In fact, those three states now have more electoral votes that California.

Florida is far larger than any northern state besides NY and North Carolina and Georgia are barely behind Michigan in size (15 to 17) and quickly catching up to OH, IL and PA.

There is no "Party of Lincoln". The parties have changed and morphed so much over the years that they just can't be compared to something 150 years ago.

Be proud of your state, but know that the strength of this nation is now in the southern and western states. The North East and much of the mid-west is totally irrelevant to the GOP due to population shifts and union reliance.
