Ed Bradley Calls Election for Bush on CBS, Rather Objects In a rather testy on-air exchange, circa 12:30am PST, between Dan Rather, CBS anchor, and Ed Bradley, long-time corresponent for CBS's 60 Minutes and an election night commentator, Bradley rather roundly criticized both Kerry and his own network for not accepting the obvious mathematics and calling the election for Bush.
Bradley pointed out that Bush leads Kerry by 145,000 votes in Ohio, and even if 250,000 provisional ballots remain (which he considered a high estimate), and that even if all the provisional ballots are valid, Kerry would need 79% of them in order to tie. A result Bradley considered impossible. Rather's reply was basically that "it was the position of CBS News to not call the race." Rather made no attempt to refute Bradley on the facts, except to state and restate that this is what CBS was going to do.
I'd love to see the transcript of the exchange. I do wonder how much Rather's trashing of 60 Minute's reputation had to do with Bradley's willingness to challenge Rather and CBS on the air.
BTW, does anyone know how that Rathergate investigation is going?
I predict the demise of CBSNews. By 08 they are not going to be following it!!
On Foxes and Friends this am the lovely Kirin Chetry was dressed in red. How appropriate. And she looks darn good in red too.. well okay, she looks good in anything.
Bradley may wear an ear ring in his ear, but he is probably about 10 times smarter than Blather.
This election is Blather's last hurrah. He wanted it to drag on until next year.
Now, there is zero use for him at CBS. They can retire him, 60 minutes and their nightly Not News program, no one will really miss the programs or them.
Say adios, Dan and mosey down to Texas to cook up some more conspiracy Blathter/lies about President Bush.
That's right Danny boy, President Bush, inspite of your vile lies for 4 + years. Take your Viagra and go hold hands with your role model/serial liar, Uncle Walter.
This would be like watching two 90-year-olds mud wrestling. How pathetic do these senile, has-beens have to get before they pull them off the air?! (My sincere apologies to any 90 year old freepers.)
No need. The MSM is being checked and balanced by independent media: the blogosphere. Remember, their bias will relegate them to irrelevancy since their viewership will be diminished exponentially. There is an economic imperative at CBS to air the CBSNews, if Sumner Redstone its chairman cannot justify its viability, he will either re-direct it to the right (a la FOX) or shut it down outright. I for one would not like to see it shut down. The medium is not the problem, it is the (leftist) message that is!!
Marshal Macluhan where are you now???
I disagree, for all the crap Brokaw takes, and in many cases rightfully so, I think he played it relatively well. I watched NBC on and off all night because the Fox panel just seemed to drag on and they all seemed depressed right after the Drunk Estrich exchange
Mrs Paulson and I thought that particular exchange was quite delicious.
Reality sinks in... on some, but not others.
Saw the same thing with Brokaw and Russert...
Russert did the math. saw bush had 269... and pointed out that the pubbies had won control of the HOUSE AND SENATE, so that even a tie would result in a bush/cheney win... and that was the end of it.
to be honest, brokaw looked relieved.
Brokaw and Russert had asked Limbaugh to be on their coverage last night, weeks in advance. Rush wanted to, but couldn't be there.
But it's pretty clear that CBS is in quicksand, and the other organizations, are NOT going to jump in headfirst to follow diver dan to the bottom of the bog...
I enjoyed russert's 'election board' and Brokaw's closing.
They added it up, told it like it was, and said that if it went as THEY had called it in Ohio... kerry was dung beetle juice. They were right, and kerry was squirted out of the beetle's arse early this A.M.
good.
And it was the position of Bob Schieffer to sit at the desk with his arms crossed, pouting like a two-year-old.
Is this true?
Kirin would even look good in nothing at all
I watched Fox, too but they weren't much better. I had the feeling Brit was waiting for someone else to call it and was getting really perplexed because no one did.
Than they got all bent out of shape cause Thune gave his victory speech before the networks called it for him.
Because someone out there in the audience may be ready to hear the truth.
Yeah he's got some nerve, thinking he can operate independently from CBS. Sheesh, Becky.
Rather did not want to do the math.
I saw that, and we had simultaneous dropped jaws! (Same with Peter Jennings brushing Ed Gillespie off at the end of their interview by asking (sort of), "Can you answer a question without spinning?")
We just howled, watching Rather torture the numbers with his Etch-A-Sketch Vote-a-matic.
I'm surprised that Mark Halperin actually showed his face on ABC last night. What an arrogant twerp.
I was stuck on broadcast - at least KTVU channeled FNC most of the night until their 10 pm newscast took over.
And yes, I did hear Shep Smith emit that burp in the middle of his sentence. :-)
I liked, "...like running through a fire wearing a gasoline suit."
Did you hear Andrea Mitchell's remark about "if WE get the votes," or something like that? A friend heard that, but I didn't.
