Could this be the boat they launched secretly? The one we knew nothing about until it hit the water?
Elint is still a possibility. We don't know how much they gleaned from our aircraft. Three years is enough time to implement.
One more thought; it may be actively comms disruptive based on the same info from our aircraft.
Yep.
Almost Thanksgiving...
Thats a distinct possibility.
They seem to have 1980's era gear on them and are roughly equivalent to our old Permit class submarine's, except they are seriously loud.
The French helped the Chinese put them together, so they cant be much. Wonder how well they would stand a depth charging..LOL
Gee we wandered around their waters for about ten hours now and they've just shown up with a destroyer task force and antisubmarine aircraft overhead. ~Writing, scribble scribble~ Okay, let's BUG OUT before they drop depth charges!
Hey, not a problem. Looks like typical propoganda stuff, but I don't read arabic.
I don't know how they accomplish anything -- they must spend a good bit of time in photoshop to get all these stupid pics out...
Yep. That's it. Any clue as to the meaning?
"Might they be probing for response times or force structure in the responses?"
Could be, the good lord knows we submariners love to probe......
Thats a very good possibility, but the big picture would dictate they would get all the information they can before doing a hiyaki and running.
I think they were logging aircraft, troop and ship movements from Okinawa, and had been there for some time. Counter-detection and detection was definitely part of the game, in my opinion.
Worst case scenario for them is to be depth charged to the surface and the surviving crew (if there is any) tried for espionage....but it wont happen.
Best case is they will be tracked back to port and a formal complain lodged against the Chinese govt.
The days of hardwiring taps into underwater phone lines are long past.
I wonder if it was a test.
It had to be Hipshot....
ELINT gathering is my opinion....and testing
shhhhhhhhh!
Only the one in the Sea of Okhotsk got really publicized. :) God Bless the boys in Subdevgruone and Parche.
Whoops. I should have read the thread before responding to my ping.
They may be recording elint to test their new toys. They may be up by enough to be in the ballpark.
The more I think about it though, elint seems the least likely. It doesn't take a boat to record data bursts.
I think I'll side with you on the probe, ExSoldier.
Now, now you sailors.........

Me and my big mouth. Next thing you know I'll be giving tactical information away about the CSS Hunley. :)

Next question, before I have to go and do some chores:
If they are snooping around Japan and Okinawa, where have they been we dont know about? If they are entering into the the "game", whats the intent?
It wont be long before a 688 cleans their clock...of that I am certain. I have faith in CSS-7
