SACRAMENTO Republican hopes that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's popularity would help the party win more seats in the Legislature have faded in the final days before Tuesday's election as Democrats enjoyed a boost from the presidential campaign.
Just weeks ago, Republican officials spoke optimistically about the potential impact of hearty campaigns by Schwarzenegger in behalf of Assembly and Senate candidates. Now, however, even some sources close to the governor concede that the outlook has darkened for Republican candidates and that Democrats could gain a seat.

Months ago, GOP strategists had said they looked forward to vigorous support from Schwarzenegger on behalf of Senate and Assembly candidates, and they weren't complaining last week about his commitment.
"He's done radio, he's done phones; he's been excellent," the GOP's Rexroad said. "He's made these races competitive."
The governor has convened rallies on behalf of five candidates all in the last two weeks. He also has attended six fundraisers and recorded phone messages and radio ads touting several candidates. Schwarz- enegger's photo appears on the campaign literature of many of the 49 Republicans he endorsed.
But he has not filmed any television ads on behalf of legislative candidates, despite having done so for several ballot propositions.
"We don't over-appropriate," Schwarzenegger spokesman Rob Stutzman said. "We're very specific in how we allocate the governor's image on TV."

CA is a lost cause.
I am outta there at long last.
I don't believe anything from LA Times. Unfortunately, our local newspaper here in HI use a lot of materials from them.
The headline translated: The LA Times is worried about the GOVENATOR's star power.
The L.A Times just another foot soldier in the Partisan Democrat Media.
They wish.
"He's done radio, he's done phones; he's been excellent," the GOP's Rexroad said. "He's made these races competitive."
So the state GOP isn't complaining but the Dem LAT is trying to make an issue of this.
This is the dying legacy rag that worked so hard to
defeat Ahnold's gubernatioral run, correct?
Wouldn't you love to have your very OWN newspaper?
CA and Illnois GOP state parties need revamping, nice to see Arnold helping out but I keep reading about Boxer's opponent( I can't even remember the guy's name)doing NOTHING in this race. What is that about.
I hate to agree with the Times, but they are right. Arnold endorsed Jones early on for the Senate and then disappeared. I think Arnold did one fund raiser for Jones. I do not know if Jones had any TV ads or not. The GOP in CA. is a joke. Arnold is in it for himself.
Last-minute lies from the LA Slimes. Nothing new.
It's a party thing.. best as I can tell.
The CA GOP power trioka has a hard time backing an 'outsider' money-wise, which of late , is anyone with a conservative bent to them, it would seem. ;-)
Yup, one amongst many rags in this state that tow the 'leftist/progressive' line..
I can't thank al eGore enuf for inventing the internet. ;-)
The LA Times talking about Ahnuld again: now that's a riot!
Arnold would have problems at home if he got too Republican.
People in this state seem to LOVE vapid, clueless females (my Congresscritter is the insipid Lois Capps, who's never had an original thought in her head).
I've gotten 3 phone calls from the govenator.
