Britt Hume quizzes Fox pollster, he admits "we're not very good" Halloween screwed things up
Special Report with Britt Hume | 11/01/2004

Posted on 11/01/2004 3:47:09 PM PST by motife

Britt Hume just quizzed the Fox pollster, who looks to be about 25, on the strange results of weekend polls. The pollster said there's really no difference between Fox having Kerry +2 and Battleground with Bush +3. Same number. That's social science, he says.

Then Britt brought up the more glaring state poll results Fox has. Kerry 49 Bush 43 in Florida vs. Quinnipiac having Bush 51 Kerry 43. Again, he said that those 2 polls says the same thing(!!) but the pollster REALLY looked sheepish after he said it. He said Fox is not very good at taking state polls, since they're so new at it. Florida is particularly hard, he says because of its great diversity. Also that Halloween on a Sunday is very hard to poll on. When do you call, during the day, at night? Are you under-representing people with kids who aren't answering the phone?

Britt was very gentle with this guy, but I think Britt was embarassed also. Fred Barnes said the Fox poll was junk. Fox should have seen that when they saw Kerry leading among men(??), "no one believes that. A Halloween poll, on a Sunday? Fox should have thrown that poll out not issued it."

One has to wonder what Fox News intends to accomplish by reporting a state poll as NEWS [they all do] then also reports that their OWN pollster admits that the poll was not RELIABLE?

That makes absolutely NO friggin sense!!!

Roger Ailes.........calling Roger Ailes!!!

(In my best Red Foreman voice)
And if you aren't a dumbass, you tell your bosses that only 1 of every 10 calls are being picked up and ask what you should do. You don't pass it off as real.

The folks got a good demonstration of why all these polls are totally useless, good or bad. When the entire Fox News panel says the polls are all bunk, that says something important. And....that important thing is to make certain we get every GW Bush voter to the polls tomorrow. I am telling you people that this election tomorrow is the most important one you will ever take part in. The future of country is at stake. GET OUT THAT VOTE FOR GW BUSH. YOUR LIVES AND FREDOM IS ON THE LINE! HONESTLY, FORGET ABOUT YOUR JOBS, YOUR SCHOOLS, YOUR DAILY ACTIVITIES, ETC. TOMORROW IS A DAY THAT YOU SHOULD DEVOTE PURELY TO YOUR BLESSED COUNTRY!!! ELECT GW BUSH!!!

This is obviously Bush's fault, for putting Halloween right before the election.

Why, oh why, do the media insist on publishing the results of polls which are clearly wrong?! We've seen enough polls during this campaign which were clearly outliers. But how embarrassing for Fox, that their final poll would be so screwed up. The unwritten law of polling is that you can be wrong up to but not including the final poll.

We think Colorado is 51 for GWB and about 44 for Kerry. Mr. Cheney visited here briefly on his way back from Hawaii. While he was here, Mr. Cheney mentioned that he was pretty sure Hawaii would be GWB's as well as Colorado.

After watching the margin of error explained on the Brit Hume show here is what I got.

If Bush has a lead of say Bush 48 Kerry 45. With the margin of error 3 points.

Bush at 48 may be as high as 51 or as low as 45 in that poll.
Kerry at 45 may be as high as 48 or as low as 42 in that poll.

In the extreme case Bush could beat Kerry 51-42 or Kerry could beat Bush 48-45 and the pollsters would say their Bush 48 Kerry 45 prediction was within is the margin of error.

The pollster said there's really no difference between Fox having Kerry +2 and Battleground with Bush +3. Same number.

Statistically, that is true.

Britt's answer to that was that summing several polls reduces the margin of error.

The spin on why kerry was winning with men was that they were impressed with the duck hunting.

Now I ask you, what ARE those spinners smoking.

And now we know it was a bullship poll.

As for FNC, they've lost a lot of credibility.
