CLEVELAND Thousands of people who are registered voters in Ohio and Florida possibly could vote twice in the presidential election through use of absentee ballots, The Plain Dealer reported Sunday.
An investigation of voter rolls in the two key battleground states found that some double voting has occurred previously and could go undetected Tuesday, the newspaper said. Many states have only just begun to compile statewide voter registration lists to comply with a 2002 federal voting law. Such lists allow state officials to find double registrations within a state, but states rarely coordinate with one another.
Virtually nothing prevents transitory voters from casting ballots in multiple states. In the 2000 presidential election, about 100 Ohio voters also cast ballots in Florida, where the presidential race was decided by just 537 votes, the northeast Ohio newspaper reported.
About 11,000 Republicans and 9,600 Democrats are registered in both Ohio and Florida, records show. There at least 6,400 who are either independent or registered with another party.
According to voting records, some voters registered in both Florida and Ohio in the same month, the newspaper reported.
Florida Secretary of State Glenda Hood has asked the Justice Department to launch an investigation of double voting involving people residing in Florida and other states, although a spokeswoman for Hood noted that it was not illegal to be registered in two places.
Voters who migrate between multiple homes are supposed to declare themselves a primary resident of one state for voting purposes, said Carlo LoParo, a spokesman for Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell (search). Residency rules differ from state to state.
Michael Paparizos, 67, who has homes in Pasco County, Fla., and Independence, Ohio, said he received an absentee ballot from Florida but does not plan to use it.
"I don't want to vote twice," he told the paper. "I vote in Ohio."
Execute double voters.
Electric chair? I think the needle is too "humane"
Here in the Kansas City area (both Kansas and Missouri side) they have made an example of a few voters who voted on both sides of the state line......they are going to send them to prison and fine the heck out of them.
Needs to be this way all over the country.
Yep. I wish there were a way to cross reference more easily for things like this.
If I were dishonest, I could have done this. Although I now live in Illinois and am registered here the Indiana GOP sent me a form to request an absentee ballot.
Are these voter lists available to the public? Is it possible for Freepers to our over the records and identify those who vote twice?
Just a thought.
Are these voter lists available to the public? Is it possible for Freepers to pour over the records and identify those who vote twice?
Sorry for the typo.
Both methods are too expensive and a waste of tax dollars. Small caliber bullet to the back of the head works the same and cost is miniscule.
No! Don't tell me that the late breaking lead for W. in Ohio and Florida comes from double voting?
Naw, guess not.
Yeah, let's discuss this subject NOW!
/ANGER & SARCASM
As we read this article, we need to remind ourselves that the sole purpose of Newsmax is to worry us. Sure this is a problem, but these guys have been prophets of doom since their first day on the web.
Just trying to stay positive on election eve.
Solving this widespread crime is not a big problem, technologically speaking. It needs money and the will from the top to straighten out this mess on a state-by-state level.
This is a smaller problem than putting the SIC codes or the Thomas Register on CDs. In fact, Direct Mail Houses, who know more about this than they oughta, can SELL you registered voter rolls for any state, tonight!!!!!
There is no "Top Cover" for this. When is the last time you heard W say "VOTER FRAUD?" No excuse for this on the Republican side. W ignored the theft of at least 5 states, for goodness' sake. For ever since JFK stole his election, which not even the most hardened Democrat will deny, the Republicans have turned the other cheek. All GD four of'em! Gotta stop.
yeah right. the libs will be citing this article when Bush wins both Ohio and Florida tomorrow night.
I'm sure a lot of college students are being organized to vote twice. There was some of that in 2000, but there'll be a lot more of it this year. Needless to say liberal faculty and administrators will be only too happy to encourage them.
Who knows how common double voting is? There are many cases where people have moved to nursing homes near their children, and vote both from their original home and from the nursing home.
Those, plus people who have 2 homes, plus people who just vote fraudulently...
Our election system has always been an honor system. Maybe it's time to give up that notion.
