Clinton 1, Redskins 0
On Tuesday we discussed the "Redskins rule," according to which if the Washington NFL team wins its last game before a presidential election, the incumbent party prevails; otherwise, it goes down to defeat. "As in sports," we noted, quoting an earlier article of ours, "streaks and slumps in politics go on only until they end."
Well, it turns out this particular streak already ended, eight years ago. According to blogger Justin Taylor, on whose posting we relied, the Redskins beat the Indianapolis Colts in 1996's last pre-election game, and the incumbent, Bill Clinton, was re-elected.
It's true of course that Clinton won, and the Redskins did beat the Colts, 31-16--but that game took place Oct. 27, eight years ago yesterday. On Nov. 3, the 7-1 Skins lost to the 5-3 Buffalo Bills, 38-13--and the incumbent president won two days later.

No the myth hasn't been debunked yet but it will be on Tuesday.
Good that someone is doing their homework, but honestly, it is all superstition. This country is not stupid enough to elect sKerry... they lived under Clinton for 8yrs, and they won't go there again! They dissed Gore and all that Dumocrats stand for, and they will diss them again.
Weekly Reader has also never been wrong, nor has the Halloween Mask company... but let's not rely on superstition. Let's get out there and vote, and make sure the frauds don't try to steal this election. I for one plan on being a poll watcher, and I will challenge if need be.
Your mouth to God's ears.
That this is even being discussed on this site makes it look like a DU satellite operation.
As a Wisconsin voter, who has already cast my vote for BUSH, and a Packer fan...Let me relate the following. The only thing that counts for me is how did the Packers do the last time GW Bush ran for president? They won...and so did BUSH....so eat your hearts out skerry fans...PACKERS Win again and so does BUSH
I'm tellin ya none of this matters -
Kerry made his choice when he said he'd take the W.H. over a Red Sox W.S. win.
Sox won the series - so Kerry's out!
Do you really think the Cheesehead God is going to allow Kerry to win this election after he committed the sacrilege of calling it "Lambert Field?"
As another freeper pointed out on another thread,"Blessed are the Cheesemakers".
Already heard 2 national radio news spots trumpet this as a good sign for Kerry. Np mention of the Weekly Reader of halloween mask polls going for the President.
I say we start a new one: if a team from Massachusetts, with a long winning streak loses their last game before the election and has their winning streak snapped, and right now the Patriots are losing 21-3 to the Steelers, then the candidate from Massachusetts loses the election.
The home game rule was made up after the other streak ended.
Good point. The Curse of Lambert Field.
Ever time Doug from Upland has been in Stuttgart, Germany on the night of the election, the GOP has won.
Unless, the sitting president paid homage at the winning team's stadium (in this case, Lambeau Field).
The question is: did President Bush go to Lambeau Field anytime during the week of the game? If he did, then it means he will win re-election.
I like it, and GO STEEELERS!!!1
I also would like to say that the Skins had scored a go ahead touchdown with 4 mins left in the game and it was called back for illegal motion which was a BOGUS call! Even the announcers on radio and TV stated that it was a bad call. So the question is: were the refs instructed by the NFL to throw the game to make people think that Kerry will win on Tuesday?!
It's much more important what the weather will be like on Election Day. Youth Voters, single wimmin and the terminally lazy (you know who you are) will not go out in bad weather for anything except maybe a case of beer. Pray for rain in every swing state.
I have three liberal sisters and not one of them intend to vote. They are too lazy. They admit it.
Hallowe'en has fallen on the Sunday before the election only twice since the streak started (1948 & 1976). Third time's charmed.
