Angry over on-air remark, adviser threatens a ban
Boston Globe ^ | October 31, 2004 | Patrick Healy

DES MOINES -- John Sasso, a senior adviser to John F. Kerry's presidential campaign, threatened to ban Fox News staff from the candidate's plane Friday night when Fox initially refused to apologize for a talk show host's comment that a new videotape showed Osama bin Laden with a Kerry button.

ADVERTISEMENT Kerry advisers quickly backtracked, however, concluding that an escalating conflict with a major cable channel just days before the election would do nothing to help the Democratic nominee. Kerry senior adviser Mike McCurry spoke to Fox executives Friday and yesterday and was told that the Fox News host, Neil Cavuto, may address the remark on Monday's show, officials from Fox and the Kerry campaign said.

The furor was a rare moment of visible frustration inside the Kerry camp: Kicking a major cable outlet off of the candidate's plane would almost certainly spark a run of negative stories in the media about Kerry lieutenants lashing out and their preelection confidence vanishing.

After the videotape of bin Laden was widely broadcast Friday afternoon, a Republican guest on Cavuto's show said the Al Qaeda leader's criticisms of President Bush amounted to ''an endorsement" of Kerry. A second guest objected, saying, ''I don't think he's going to have a Kerry-Edwards sticker in the cave."

Chimed in Cavuto: ''He's all but doing that. I thought I saw a button."

Can you imagine if the Bush campaign complained everytime they were hit with something like this? If they actually got news coverage over it, the first 50 pages of the newspapers would be nothing but stories like this: "Karl Rove Threatens Ban on ABC"; "Bush Campaign Takes Offense to Comments by Dan Rather"; "Republicans Boycott Three Major Networks and CNN, MTV"; etc.

Well that certainly tells us who the DNC's Mr. Miyagi is to Chad Clanton's Daniel-san.

Neil is such a solid guy and extremely smart. I, too, try never to miss his show. John Gibson is great, too. Both are "gutsy" guys.

There is obviously some tension going on in that Kerry campaign, for obvious reasons. Like, they are losing.

You nailed it! Did you read the AP article Saturday about unidentified Kerry insiders saying internal polls showed Bush had the momentum?

As soon as I saw that I said let's see if other reporters assigned to Kerry start sending signals of tension on his plane. The press pool knows from body language whether "their" candidate is winning or losing. I detected a change in their reporting about Wed. of this week. Kerry's reporters looked and sounded like they were just going through the motions.

Now we see this as the top political story in the Sunday Boston Globe:

SNIPS:

Kerry advisers quickly backtracked, however, concluding that an escalating conflict with a major cable channel just days before the election would do nothing to help the Democratic nominee...

The furor was a rare moment of visible frustration inside the Kerry camp: Kicking a major cable outlet off of the candidate's plane would almost certainly spark a run of negative stories in the media about Kerry lieutenants lashing out and their preelection confidence vanishing.

The episode was a relatively rare flash of tensions between a presidential campaign and the media this year.

Those are all signals planted in a story about a campaign that knows it's losing.

I did a while ago. I told him, that if the brass says he should apologize, he should say he's sorry. Sorry the Kerry camp has no sense of humor. Sorry that they whine about his little quip while their National Committee Chairman runs around demonizing President Bush, and other Democrats compare President Bush to Hitler with no consequence.

And let's not forget the kerry campaign's efforts to silence the Swift Boat Vets/POWs, with lawyers letters and a complaint to the FEC.

I remember that too. What does that say about us? I think the word starts with an O and ends in D.

How the heck would the wanna-be Chief Executive handle a major attack against the U.S.?

What a wuss.

And lots more gray matter than most.

For someone to react with this much hatred shows they know they are about to get their butts kicked real good on Tuesday. The Democrats are going to be furious when Bush wins going away.

Well, you know, after all the bizarre things said about President Bush, I can't say as I'm too bothered by this particular flap. Must be that I've become kinda numb to inflammatory rhetoric and hyperbole in the press.

Wonder how that happened...?

Would this be Carl Cameron who would be thrown off if Kerry's team retaliated?

If so, good riddance...just MHO (I don't really care for Carl).

He'd hide.

I am convinced that if Kerry is elected President, neither he, nor Teresa could stand up under the pressure.

The only solution he'd have is to continue to constantly blame somebody else, probably Bush.

After all, he blamed the SS agent because he fell while skiing.

Remember also what they did to the swiftboat vets. And the comment from a Kerryite about Sinclair - "They better hope we don't win"

It's a frightening picture about what leftists really feel about freedom of speech. I have never seen a campaign so ginned up to blockade information and expression of opinion.

The nuts over at DU seem to think that it is Bush who is endangering the 1st amendment, while it is Kerry who seems to be the most frightening candidate I've seen in a while.

They will shut down all opposition under the guise of "hate speech" and "fairness". Kerry is making our founding fathers roll in their grave.
