PENSACOLA, FL If you want to know where the campaign stands, just see where the candidates sit today.
George W. Bush is spending the homestretch in states carried by Al Gore in 2000.
This morning, he hammered his war on terror theme to rapturous crowds in Wisconsin and Michigan. Later this afternoon he will be visiting what has long been considered one of the most liberal states in America: Minnesota.
Interestingly enough, John Kerry also finds himself today stuck on the defensive in states carried by Gore, like Wisconsin and Iowa.
By the way, I couldn't help notice how the crowds in Iowa were almost tepid in their response to Kerry's negative message while the President was greeted like a rock star in Wisconsin and Michigan
As I learned when we Congressional Republicans tried to take on Bill Clinton in the '90s, there's just something about that presidential bully pulpit.
Bush insiders are beginning to believe that internal polls they are viewing point to one unmistakable conclusion: four more years for their man. Bushies are cheered by the fact that with 48 hours left in what was to be a barnburner campaign, the Kerry camp is still sweating out the details in New Jersey and Hawaii two states that Al Gore won by almost 20 points just four years ago.
Terror is the defining feature in both states, with Hawaiians looking westward where Al Qaeda continues to spread its politics of death, and New Jersey residents remembering the burning New York skyline just to their east across the Hudson River in 2001.
Add to those poll numbers the latest Bin Laden bombshell and you have all the makings of an early evening call for George W. Bush...

People are reminded that Bush can walk the talk in the war on terror, while Kerry votes against the money needed for our troops...yet claims he has a better "plan."
In that last minute in the booth, the burning question is "Who can I really trust?" And many know deep in their hearts, there is only one answer.
Word. LoL
What timeframe, central time zone, should it be clear who is going to win? 9pm?
I'd feel better about this if the article were coming from someone other than jumpy joe scarborough.
I'm still excited that 2 NJ and 1 NY paper endorsed President Bush. Living so close to ground zero, I don't see how they could vote for anyone but Bush!
When you are conservative you have to watch not only the cheap tricks of the campaign, but the cheap shots of the media!
"By the way I couldn't help notice the tepid response in Iowa to Kerry's negative talk while President Bush was greeted like a rock star ..."
...The American people know a REAL Man when they see one.
-Regards, T.
...while CBS/NY Times will continue limiting their polling audience to family members of Dan Rather, Mary Mapes, and Paul Krugman.lol :=)
I just saw a clip from last night's Demo gathering with Alexandra Kerry and Algore... she was reading from her "speech," rather badly. It was an appearance at a Filipino concert, and the audience was primarily Filipino (which used to vote dem but is polling heavier Republican this election). She emphasized how much her father "knows and cares about their community." One really has to wonder if Kerry knows anything at all about the Filipino community in Hawaii other than he hopes they vote for him.
The networks will try to make the maps look good for Kerry as long as possible on Tuesday. I favor doing away with the media manipulation of predicting election results by going to a uniform nationwide poll closing time.
I dream of watching the results trickle in Tuesday night and seeing NJ and NH go for Bush.
Oh what a night it would be then.
That's what happens when the crowds are only there cause they were paid.
Florida will be the key. He who wins Florida wins this election.
I'm praying we get the Sunshine State; after that everything will fall into place.
This year, the Dems will complain about the media calling the election before the last Californian has a chance to vote, mark my words.
"The networks will try to make the maps look good for Kerry as long as possible on Tuesday."
I agree. I remember last time that there were states that Bush easily won on the East coast (e.g. SC, NC, VA) and the networks were showing big vote total leads, but they waited to call for Bush. But, as we all painfully remember, they made an early (before the panhandle precincts closed) and premature call of Florida for Gore. They so wanted to annoint Gore the next POTUS. Despite the 2000 debacle, I think we can expect the same on Tuesday. They just can't help themselves.
I think we need a national poll closing time. That way no one would still be voting When the results start coming in.
Your last statement is crucial .. FOX has been showing that number as 58 for Bush and 37 for Kerry - just on the WOT issue.
