DURANGO, Colo. Oct 30, 2004 A part-time college instructor has apologized for kicking a student because he was wearing a Republican shirt.
Fort Lewis College student Mark O'Donnell said he was showing people his College Republicans sweat shirt, which said "Work for us now or work for us later," when Maria Spero kicked him in the leg at an off-campus restaurant.
Spero then said "she should have kicked me harder and higher," said O'Donnell. "To physically take that out on someone because you disagree with them, that is completely wrong."
Spero, a visiting instructor of modern languages, apologized to O'Donnell in a letter dated Oct. 29.
"I acted entirely inappropriately by kicking you, giving vent to a thoughtless knee-jerk political reaction that should never have happened," she wrote. "Before the incident, I did not know you and that you are a Fort Lewis student."
The college also formally apologized, said David Eppich, assistant to the school's president.
O'Donnell said the apology wasn't enough and he plans to file a complaint with the college.
The only phone number listed in Durango for the surname Spero was constantly busy Saturday.
Durango police did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
"Modern languages? A linguist, just like Chumpski."
- No, don't tell me. Let me guess. Ebonics?
Sorry doesn't cut it sometimes.
He should have graciously accepted her apology and offered her his hand to shake. And he should have been wearing his Bush sweatshirt and about 50 Bush buttons at the time.
I'm inclined to agree with you, but leave the college out of it.
I think you attribute too much power in the hands of men. I contend that men will always take a bite of the apple when offered it by a female even though they know the consequences.

I wouldn't call this a double post. It is the same incident but one article is from ABC the other from UPI.
Spero should be fired as should the Dean of the school. I saw another report of this that indicated that this letter stating that the teacher was 'sorry' was endorsed by the Dean. If they think a simple 'sorry' is sufficient, then they clearly have not got the message that a teacher violently attacking a student is not tolerable.
Fire Spero, the dean, and sue the school until IT bleeds!!
Liberals are psychotic.
That is all.
Sure, there are "male" democrats, Just no "MEN" democrats.
Lawsuit. Pain and suffering. Oooh, I was sooo humiliated. I think I'll need, say, a free ride to my degree.
Hey, kid, press charges! This RAT violence should be dragged thrugh the courts for everybody to see.
Wow, this thread is full of big, tough, macho-type guys. Some b*tch kicks you in the shins and you rear back, and lets see what was it you macho men said?
"bare knuckle, close fisted, full force punch..."
or "cold-cocked her, knocked her out cold with a couple of full force punches to the nose and mouth."
or was it "punched her lights out. Then again, I am a bit of a 'bruiser' for a 5'8, 190lbs Italian guy who always wears black and leathers..." (VERY imposing spectacle, no doubt)
give me a break.
A real man doesn't hit women. Period. Perhaps, rarely, a b*tch slap, but never a blow.
You start punching a woman's lights out and it only shows the whole world what a weakling you are as a man...
Wrong answer.....if a female wants to act like a man, ala trying to kick/punch me, they will be dealt with as if they are a man. No exceptions/no hesitation.
I try my best to treat EVERYONE (M/F/regardless of color, or anything else) with courtesy and respect, and that means no hitting/cursing/insulting. If my courteous behavior is not returned, OK, but if they want to get nasty or physical, I can return that in spades.
I would take that as an acknowledgement that men are choosing to inflict this on each other, and on themselves indrectly as a result. That's hardly a lack of power, but more a lack of discretion in using it.
well, whatever. in my book, men and women are different and in some ways treated differently. if that's the wrong answer, call me wrong. but it's not.
If a woman attacks a man, what options would you offer him? Would you place those same restrictions on a woman who is attacked by a smaller man?
If a woman attacks a man, he should restrain her, and then press charges if the situation warrants it. (Like in this article). If it's some significant other who is attacking, my advice would be to dump her as soon as possible.
If some tiny little guy is physically attacked by some amazon, then of course he needs to do what it takes to protect himself from serious injury... whatever it takes. But most men are in no danger from women.
But the point is, the majority of men, if kicked or slapped by some irate female, have no need to lay her out, so to speak. It only shows his weakness if he does that. Only the very weakest of men would "cold-cock" a woman who kicked him.
