DURANGO, Colo. Oct 30, 2004 A part-time college instructor has apologized for kicking a student because he was wearing a Republican shirt.
Fort Lewis College student Mark O'Donnell said he was showing people his College Republicans sweat shirt, which said "Work for us now or work for us later," when Maria Spero kicked him in the leg at an off-campus restaurant.
Spero then said "she should have kicked me harder and higher," said O'Donnell. "To physically take that out on someone because you disagree with them, that is completely wrong."
Spero, a visiting instructor of modern languages, apologized to O'Donnell in a letter dated Oct. 29.
"I acted entirely inappropriately by kicking you, giving vent to a thoughtless knee-jerk political reaction that should never have happened," she wrote. "Before the incident, I did not know you and that you are a Fort Lewis student."
The college also formally apologized, said David Eppich, assistant to the school's president.
O'Donnell said the apology wasn't enough and he plans to file a complaint with the college.
The only phone number listed in Durango for the surname Spero was constantly busy Saturday.
Durango police did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
"About what? The college didn't kick him."
The college bears liability for what its staff does.
That's not true. More pussification of America. I went to school when corporal punishment was allowed. Some of my best teachers could also whip ass at the hint of disrespect.
So much for dealing with it.
Just damn.
If you want on the list, FReepmail me. This IS a high-volume PING list...
Surely that ends with the campus borders, unless the staff carries out college missions off campus.
I hope his lawsuit earns him millions.
Doesn't Hank Hill say "if you disagree with me I'll kick your a$$"?
Tragic.
I don't want you to answer me. I want all men to answer themselves.
Oh, so if he wasn't a Fort Lewis student, her behavior would have been OK????
Fire the bitch. Teach her a lesson that she won't soon forget.
Chicken - $#!T lefty. Do it to his face.
it is never right for a man to strike or run roughshod over a woman. if a woman does it to a man outside of self defense, it is wrong as well. two wrongs don't make a right.
Rest assured that many men already do but as long as American culture portrays men as evil and women as pure, don't expect much to change.
Muleteam1
Even in self defense aginst a woman who would kill you? If that is your choice, fine, as long as you remember it is YOUR choice, not the "system".
Men are willing participants in that portayal, when other men are involved. It will change when men decide to change it.
"Want to act like a man, I`ll treat you like man and if any man hit me, we would be throwin down right there and then."
I agree, but let's face it: men and women are not equal, have never been equal and will never be equal and this sort of incident proves it.
The "Lady" in question would have had him arrested, sued and won damages if he, the assult victim, had responded with one stiff defensive shot.
That is: the courts would have sided with her. The cops would have sided with her and the media would have sided with her.
Moreover SHE would not have seen the hypocrisy in the situation. This is because she understands at least on a subconcious level that men and woman are not interchangable.
Me...I would have popped her and damn the consequences, and I have never struck a woman in my life even though I have been slapped a few times. (The less said about those incidents the better)
Ah, yes, the party of diversity and tolerance.
"I acted entirely inappropriately by kicking you, giving vent to a thoughtless knee-jerk political reaction that should never have happened," she wrote. "Before the incident, I did not know you and that you are a Fort Lewis student."
Ah, soooooo, if the student was just someone hangin' around the place it would have been OK, eh? No matter that you're supposed to be an educator and be setting an example; no matter that the person has a different ideology than you have; no matter that it is a public place and people are guaranteed their say by a little thing called the ... ah ... what was that again? ... oh yeah, THE CONSTITUTION
What a POS ... I agree with the student, the apologies are not enough. Sic 'em!
