If we had listened to Ion Pacepa, former Chief of Romanian Intelligence, Russia would have been a prime suspect a long time ago!!!

Weren't there some reports just before the war started that mentioned the fact that some Russian troops had gone to Iraq? I think the excuse given was that they were there to oversee the safe evacuation of all Russian nationals, but they ended up travelling all across the country instead.
To: TapTheSource
Russia has always tried to get in our way with Iraq. Remember the Gulf I. The Russian just got a little religion after they got hit. This report does not surprise me one bit. The problem for Russia is to find out where their guys took them. Chechnya? Now there's a problem.

Well, the other possibility to considder is this was a case of good cop, bad cop.
Russia talking the weapons right out of Saddam's hands before the US arrives, with full knowledge of the Pentigon.
Just think how many US lives that _might_ have saved.
Things are not always what they seem...

Calm down - ()
From post: "Moscow denies the assertions, and the Russian embassy in Washington D.C. branded the claims as "nonsense." Pentagon spokesman Larry Di Rita was "unaware" of the statements, according to early press reports."
'Tis the season for political games - and they had to have someone to blame -
I am more wondering of the K. Treaty go that Russia did just recently - Would be interesting to know why that happened -
just my thought -

...Two Defense Department officials described to Bill Gertz of the Washington Times how Russian "spetsnaz" units organized large truck convoys to move Iraq's most powerful weaponry and related material into Syria, Lebanon, and possibly Iran, just before the U.S.-led coalition launched its attack. Russian troops also destroyed evidence of Moscow's military assistance program to Iraq - aid that was illegal under UN sanctions... .......to Iran and also to the 3 (SH) Mystery Ships to the Sudan and Egypt?

The Bush Administration is neither surprised nor unprepared.
President Bush has not relied on Russian support--or the support of our purported allies in France and Germany--and for good reason. He knew that they were treacherous, corrupt, and unreliable.
Senator Kerry, on the other hand, is eager to rely on our "allies"--to the extent that he intends to subordinate our national defense and decisions to them and to the United Nations. So much for Sen. Kerry's reliability.
President Bush is a brilliant and courageous leader.
Sen. Kerry cannot be trusted--either his wisdom or his integrity.

Kerry supporters care only about Abortion, Gays and Welfare. If this is an "October Surprise", its effect will not be noticable. Only a revelation that Kerry is a "closet" evangelical could do him any damage.
As for Russia, they will have to choose sides. In an international poll, the people in every country were opposed to President Bush except Israel and Russia.

On March 20, Russian President Vladimir Putin denounced the U.S.-led "aggression" against Iraq as "unwarranted" and "unjustifiable." Three days later, Pravda said that an anonymous Russian "military expert" was predicting that the United States would fabricate finding Iraqi weapons of mass destruction. Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov immediately started plying the idea abroad, and it has taken hold around the world ever since.Great article... I knew I remeberd the Russians predicting no WMD... or planted WMD.

"The real issue is not supposed U.S. incompetence, but Moscow's inability to tell the truth and the readiness of the "international community" to condemn America." - driven by the propaganda, lies and incompetence of Dan Rather, the NY Slimes and the rest of the MSM. That Kerry just parrots their lies would be humorous, if it weren't so dangerous.

"The approximately 400 tons of RDX and HMX high explosives from Al-Qaqaa were "almost certainly" included in the clandestine Russian convoys, according to one of Gertz's Pentagon sources. "
Yeah, I heard one of the leftist stooges on Dayside ask "If we were flying the no fly zones, then why didn't we see the trucks leaving and why didn't we bomb them?"
This would explain why not...

I was thinking about Ion Pacepa's writings while reading the article as well. Deniability was built into the program design.
Despite facing some similar attacks from islamists, Russian officialdom continues to criticize Israel's every action (that are especially careful comparing with Russian clumsy disregard to human life). They refused to apply pressure on Iran to stop nuclear developing. There is, looks like, some quiet cooperation between special forces lately, but Russia continues official support of its former(?) Mideast clients.
Its understandable that Russia like any country pursues its own interests first. It just looks like duplicity more often that I'd like.

I remember about three or four threads ago on the Threat Matrix we pondered the likelihood of
IVAN Spetznatz being involved with terrorists. It has already been firmly proven by uncovered KGB documents that the Russkies were supporting terror causes with money (primarily) and training/equipment since the 1950's.
The question that seems to be hanging right now seems pretty forthright: Are the new revelations about Russian involvement with Saddam a result of knowing and enthusiastic support by Putin who would therefore be playing a classic "Final Phase" scenario? OR are there still rogue elements that are running an independent operation via old KGB assets and without Putin's knowledge?
