funny article about the Red Sox, Cubs, White Sox, and John Kerry:
"Kerry is a lost cause, even if 'his' team wins"
by John Kass
Chicago Tribune, October 28, 2004

John Kerry believes he's a Boston Red Sox fan, especially now, with the Red Sox in the World Series. This may be true. Or it could be mere politics, all about convincing voters he's a regular guy and not just some nerdy politician who married the rich Mrs. Ketchup.

Lately he's been seen purchasing a hunting license with a Hollywood Hillbilly accent, shooting guns, throwing balls and drinking beer, all in manly fashion.

He already has proved he's a Red Sox fan, like the time last summer when he applauded the great "Manny Ortiz."

Unfortunately for Kerry, there is no Manny Ortiz on the ballclub. The Red Sox do have a David Ortiz and a Manny Ramirez, though . . . .

Either way, in this World Series, I'm for Kerry's team.

That's because I'm a White Sox fan sickened by a strange new World Series theory designed to help Cubs fans. I saw it in a newspaper somewhere.

It suggests that if the long-cursed Red Sox finally win the championship, this could encourage the similarly cursed Cubs.

The Red Sox and Cubs have their cute curses. Their losing ways have been romanticized by poets, folksingers, artists in residence at various small colleges, sociologists and other typical Kerry voters.

But there is no mention of the hapless White Sox in such elitist media theories, proving once again the media is unaware of its inherent bias in supporting Kerry.

The last time the White Sox won a series (not tossed one) was 1917. Yet Sox fans have no cute songs, no cute curses about Bambinos and goats. There's nothing nice about losing if you were born on the South Side. And the only White Sox curse is a real one involving bones.

The FBI a few years ago dug up a parking lot at Sox Park and found a few bones thought to belong to Chicago Outfit thug "Bones" Albergo.

The bones were sent to the FBI lab but they weren't blessed. Priests were not called to sprinkle holy water on the site. Naturally, the White Sox caved to the Twins. But they also caved to the Twins before Bones was found.

This business about the Red Sox helping the Cubs is not only pro-Kerry political propaganda, it's wrong. Mike McNally said so.

"Of course it's wrong," McNally said.

He should know. He's runs McNally's Tavern, a White Sox-only bar at 11136 S. Western Ave. that serves cheap beer if the Cubs are humiliated. He put the lie to this notion that Red Sox wins help the Cubs.

"It's crazy," he said. "I'm for the Red Sox, you're for the Red Sox, and you know why?"

Tell me.

"Because if Boston wins, the monkey's really on the backs of the Cubs. Then they'll be the only loser. And they'll crack again next year, like they did this year and last. It's fun to watch. Remember that Sports Illustrated cover that had the Cubs in the World Series? I've got it up on the wall right now. We laugh at it. It's fun."

But aren't our White Sox losers too?

"Sure, but we're not lovable losers. We're just losers. There's nothing lovable about the South Side," McNally said. "So if the Red Sox win, all it will do is pour shame and pressure on the Cubs. Isn't that good?"

I wrote this column before Game 4 of the World Series on Wednesday night, since I wanted to watch the game, so for all I know, the Red Sox could have won and swept the Cardinals.

If they do win, will Kerry be tempted to talk about his great personal moments of Red Sox history?

"My favorite Red Sox player of all time is `The Walking Man,' Eddie Yost," he told baseball reporters a while back.

Yet as Boston baseball writer Peter Gammons pointed out, Eddie Yost never played for the Red Sox. He played for the old Washington Senators.

Ooops.

Kerry also claims he sat in Fenway Park for the 1986 World Series against the Mets, the night that ground ball rolled through Bill Buckner's legs. Yet according to newspaper accounts, Kerry was at a political fundraiser that night.

This might help us understand Kerry's mind, which supporters say allows him to see the world more clearly than other politicians'.

Kerry talks in a Jethro accent when buying a hunting license because he believes hunters speak country. He believes Yost played for Boston. He believes he witnessed the Buckner ground ball. His mind makes it so.

Kerry's a fan who's just got to believe.

"Family Day" got delayed until Monday.

I never did figure out what's wrong with the CD burner. I'm thinking it's a conflict between the CD burner software that came with this computer (that's now 2.5+ yo) and updated (except for Service Pack 2) Windows XP Pro. Beyond that, I haven't tried again. Ruining four CDs in one day was enough for my frustration levels, so I haven't tried again. ;)

(Bummer is that they were ALL blue CDs! Broke my heart!)

Birthday was low-key. No big dinner, but we did the Cub Scouts' Halloween party - in costume. That was fun.

The Tri-birthday for the Home Detachment includes Halloween parties all over the place, so I'm looking forward to more!

I have about the same setup as you - Windows XP Pro, about 2 years old; recently downloaded the Service Pack 2.

Uh oh. Now I'm really nervous.

Are the blue CDs your favorite? (Mine too! LOL!)
