We didn't find any farmer's markets, and one grossly over priced fabric store with nary an Amish woman is sight.
Here we have a flea market where the Amish sell their crafts, five fabric stores in a ten mile radius, the original Lehman's and the restaurants are not only reasonably priced, they are clean, the food is outstanding and your waitress will likely be an Amish teen who will graciously answer questions.
Don't get me started on the furniture shops!

That's great! Bush is turning out 10's of thousands everywhere he goes. I'd love to know Kerry's crowd sizes.

Yea, I was really ticked tonight on my way home from a business trip and heard CBS radio report on the top of the hour that "Kerry spoke to thousands." As an afterthought, they mentioned that President Bush had a rally in Michigan (no mention of the Silverdome and the tens of thousands!).

You have to be a local to know about the farmer's markets. They hold them in different places on different days, and they are out in the middle of nowhere. But if you really want a Pennsylvania Dutch experience, that's the place to go.

When I first moved here, I was a business consultant. I was hired to do some planning for a local meat company. They had a picture on the wall of a guy loading meat into the back of a wagon. The owner told me it was his great-great grandfather. I replied that his company must have been in business a long time. He said that his family has sold at the farmer's markets continually since the 1750's, more than 100 years before they even had photographs.

That taught me a lot about the Pennsylvania mindset. They have deep, traditional roots and they are very slow to change.

I love that there were Amish families there. The Amish are very good people.

Thank you for the pictures. What a nice surprise to see so many Amish out in support of the President. Astounding really.

Seeing W, waving the flag, hanging out with the Amish and getting interviewed by Swiss socialists is pretty darn cool.

here is an interesting article 8/04 about the Amish and a snide remark by a dem that the Republicans would probably be trying to phone bank the Amish..

http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/08/05/amish.vote.ap/

about 55,000 in Ohio..180,000 nationwide...

one expanation
A lot of Amish Ohioans respect the president as a man of faith and someone who leads with conviction," Mauk said. "These are people who care about our religious freedom and the moral fabric of society. That's motivating a lot of Amish to do what they have not done before, and reach out to us to start a dialogue."

Remeber John Howard's race in Austarlia just a few weeks ago? The media there and here were reporting it neck and neck and Howard slightly down yet heand his party won decisively. We're going to see the same thing here.

Not sure but I'd suspect that they see more clearly than most just how far down the path to hell this country has already been taken by the left and they are becoming increasingly scared about how their way of life will be affected by a Kerry White House. That, and the fact that the president is the most outspokenly Christian leader this country has had in decades.
