“The Iraqi explosives story is a fraud. These weapons were not there when US troops went to this site in 2003. The IAEA and its head, the anti-American Mohammed El Baradei, leaked a false letter on this issue to the media to embarrass the Bush administration. The US is trying to deny El Baradei a second term and we have been on his case for missing the Libyan nuclear weapons program and for weakness on the Iranian nuclear weapons program.”

No, you're right. Evidently it's not a forgery, just a lie, based on another lie.
As I recall the Times article was an elaborate and lengthy production by several reporters. Too bad they never bothered to check it.
The story does not say forgery, please change the headline.
BTW, the Rather memos were not forgeries. They were fabrications.
Still, a false letter is just as damaging. It means that the Times ran with a story without substantiating the facts. All they would have to do is call the Pentagon and check. Heck, they could have called their buddies at NBC to find out the truth.
It could be faked but authentic.
