DOYLESTOWN, Pa. - Ginny Schrader, the Democratic candidate for the U.S. House seat from Pennsylvania's 8th Congressional District, left a debate with Republican Mike Fitzpatrick, saying she was angry over a GOP mailer that criticized her screening of a controversial film at a fund-raiser.
Sponsored by the National Republican Congressional Committee and sent out Saturday, the mailer criticized Schrader's decision in July to screen Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11," which is sharply critical of President Bush and the war in Iraq.
The mailing, headlined "Ginny Schrader: The Hate America crowd has found their candidate," claims Hezbollah, a group of Lebanon-based guerillas identified by the United States and Israel as terrorists, has offered to distribute Moore's film.
"Let me assure you, I don't hate America," Schrader said in her opening remarks Monday. "This mentions Hezbollah. Half my family is Jewish. This is totally unacceptable."
She also asked Fitzpatrick to apologize. Fitzpatrick, who sat stoically next to the standing Schrader, did not respond.
Moderators repeatedly asked Schrader to stop her opening statement and her microphone was eventually turned off. She then walked away from the dais to some applause.
The debate, sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Bucks County and the Central Bucks Chamber of Commerce, continued with Fitzpatrick, Erich Lukas of the Constitution Party and Arthur Farnsworth of the Libertarian Party.
The candidates are vying to succeed moderate Republican Rep. Jim Greenwood, who is not running for re-election.
Fitzpatrick said afterward that he was disappointed Schrader left, but he refused to apologize.
"It isn't something we sent out," he said of the mailing. "I don't condone it, and I didn't pay for it."
Bo Harmon, a spokesman for the National Republican Congressional Committee, defended the mailing. "We're simply trying to demonstrate that Ginny Schrader is aligning herself with groups that are very outside of the mainstream," he said.
Stacey Kerr, a spokeswoman for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, called the mailing "the most hateful piece of mail we have seen in this election cycle."
Thus the old adage: The truth hurts, don't it? ;-)
She picked up her marbles and went home. Poor Baby. If her party had done something like that though she would of said it was fair game. How pathetic and if they elect her shame on them. We want adults in Congress. Not children.
FINALLY!! A REPUBLICAN WITH ENUFF OF A SPINE TO STAND UP TO THESE TWO FACED DEmonCRAPS!! GOOD FOR HIM!!!!
There's their code word: "hateful"
They love it because it doesn't require any other explanation or defense.
Funny, I thought of the movie as a hateful piece of propaganda that no one in the Democratic Party leadership seemed willing to condemn, even after it was debunked.
Schrader... isn't she the one running ads on all the pinko blogs? 1 more week of fame I guess
You'll see that Ginny's in
about what actually happened when compared to the TimesLeader report on the same incident.
It is precisely that that keeps lefties from appealing to sensible Americans.
Welcome to The Bigs, Ginny!
Now go and sit quietly at the Kiddie Table. Adults are busy here.
Jack.
Put some ice on that old tired phrase.
Half her family is Jewish? who cares? plenty of Jews will vote Democrat and they know Arafat , Castro and the terrorists back John Kerry. You tell me why?
You're right; complete denial. Her version is that "When Mr. Fitzpatrick failed to apologize, Schrader excused herself from the debate". I don't see anything on her press release about refusing to stop her opening statement. And the Times Leader/AP version says nothing about here "excusing herself".
Well, technically Fahrenheit 911 wasn't a piece of mail.
All Women on the Board, Please fire a letter off to this cry-baby sissy!!!

Here's mine:
Ms Schrader,
You have made us women look just fantastic. Thanks for being such a cry-baby and leaving the stage during the debate. Once again, women will have to work toward earning our place equal to men. Women like you, who cry like a girl when things don't go your way, ruin it for the rest of us who brave it out each and every day. And I might add, we women do not have to brave nearly as much as the average male does.
If you can't hang with the big boys, get out of the race.
You are absolutely the most despicable example of female leadership I have seen in quite some time.
Sincerely,
All she did was show the most hateful film we have heard of in the election cycle.
Words of the day...Idiot woman.
This is the third candidate I have heard of in the last week who walked out of a debate.
And I think all of them were Democrats. (Terry Anderson, former hostage, was one of them)
My daughter just got this mailer yesterday. Since she got it and I didn't, I wondered if it were targeted for young voters. I guess not. It has a black and white face (I don't know what kind of art that's called) on the front and most of the mailer is in drippy red and black. I think it carried the subtle message that she is a socialist. Very, very effective! Then we saw an ad on TV that said she hadn't voted in the last 5 elections and she was quoted as saying that her interests weren't local but national. Just devasting. And my husband, a democrat, got a mailer yesterday from the RNC just nailing Kerry. It's the first time I've ever noticed him getting a mailer from the Republicans.
