KERRY'S 'SHOOT QUAYLE' REMARK TREATED WITH KID GLOVES
Sen, Jesse Helms(R.) has certainly received relentless savaging from the media for his tart remark that President Bill Clinton had better have a "bodyguard" if he visits military installations in the senator's home state of North Carolina. But the same media barely noticed the comment of Sen. John Kerry (D.-Mass.) back in 1988--shortly after George Bush was elected President--that "The Secret Service is under orders that if Bush is shot, to shoot Quayle." (For more on the media treatment of Helms, see page 3.)
Unlike the Helms jibe, Kerry's was a one-day story. There was no media frenzy over Kerry's "meanness." No one demanded that he resign from his seat on the Foreign Relations Committee. No one ever used his comment to block him from becoming chairman of the committee's Terrorism, Narcotics and International Operations panel. And no one argued it should bar him from sitting on the Select Committee on Intelligence.
Meanwhile, what's this conservative canard about bias in the media'?
Whoops, Kerry's joke was in 1988.
The Dim Media love to slobber all over themselves with praise, concerning Teraisin Heinz's outspokenness; however, I don't hear any media outrage over the pie attack on Ann Coulter, an outspoken conservative.
"after George Bush was elected President--that "The Secret Service is under orders that if Bush is shot, to shoot Quayle."
Wow, I never heard that before. This is a good Lurch anecdote to bring up. He doesn't appear to have much of a sense of humor. I guess this is what he considers funny.
And Kerry also joked about taking a gun to his debate with Bush in 2004.
Funny how the Guardian gets nailed for following the Democratic talking point of '04.
I doubt it was a joke.
Still, it's a great reminder, but not likely to be newsworthy today since the MSM wants to forget everything that makes Kerry's candidacy implausible.
Actually the Quayle joke WAS funny.
Article states: No one ever used his comment to block him from becoming chairman of the committee's Terrorism, Narcotics and International Operations panel. And no one argued it should bar him from sitting on the Select Committee on Intelligence.
Well..since they didn't expect him to attend Committee meetings.....they were correct!
I wasn't trying to defend the editor -- just point out that it is ironic considering Kerry once made an irresponsible comment himself.
Maybe this is a sadistic pattern among liberals.
"Actually the Quayle joke WAS funny."
If it were a joke by a late night comedian I would agree with you. However, it's not funny coming from a stoic dork like Kerry.
Repeating the Quayle joke was one of the few things
Kerry is on record as ever having apologized for.
He has not, for example, apologized for the recent
stump speech joke about not being able to take a
gift shotgun to the debates.

LYNN -- Sen. John Kerry apologized yesterday for a telling a joke about Vice President-elect Dan Quayle.
At a businessmen's breakfast Tuesday, Kerry responded to a question about Quayle's qualifications by saying, "The Secret Service is under orders that if Bush is shot, to shoot Quayle."
