I believe they use the same card in the voting machines. When they are used there they line up with the holes through which the holes are punched.

Scroll down for phone numbers for election officials.
also, write to
election@sos.state.oh.us
asking why the butterfly ballot is designed to invalidate votes for Bush!
I did
OHIO voters needed to write to them!

So is it "4" or was the "1" missing from "14"?

these people are incompetent at best. what is it that is so difficult about running elections? good grief. they should use "experts" to QA and validate their election ballots to eliminate stupid mistakes and just poor communication of information. why doesn't the fed require some standardization for the federal elections? is it because the democrats always want the option to manipulate elections?

I doubt it is incompetence.

Possibilities I see:

A) the ballot shown is fake (perhaps "1" removed with photoshop)
B) It's real, and the "1" was left off the ballot by mistake--meaning Bush should be "14" but the ballot says you should punch "4".
C) It's real and the "1" was intentionally left off--which means Bush should be "4"--and this would make the numbering very odd.

I suspect if the image is real, this was done intentionally--since it makes Bush voters have to guess between following instructions, or making logical sense. I's say they should follow instructions, since it's a Demo run county, and they don't follow logic. ;-)

I also should have noted that if it's supposed to be "4" for Bush, and assuming the disqualified candidate is Nader, then the punches are in alphabetical order by Presidential candidate last name, while the listings are alphabetical by party. That's not consistent.

So. BITS time is here.

This ballot makes perfect sense: Kerry wins hands down. It is the only possible choice a person could make upon first glance. That the instructions would say to punch 4 for Bush would simply be reason to make Bush's election that much more unlikely.

Voting for Kerry requires the least amount of effort, don't cha know.........something like the road to hell-o.

And we do know for whom the designer is going to vote, now, don't we?

I lived in Cuyahoga county for most of my life, and used these voting cards for 20+ years. The card is in a slot where the numbers cannot be seen. Also, I don't recall ever seeing a large number next to the candidate's name. There's just names with arrows pointing to a hole in the machine that lines up with holes in the card. As you turn the pages to vote on other candidates/issues, the visible holes in the machine are aligned with another column of holes in the card.

Frankly, I think that this is a fake.

I hope and pray you are right. I see license after license from out of state here everyday. Today, some nut from Penn was ahead of me, complete with tags that had expired in January. Patriots and law-abiding citizens--are the only ones I will ever defend again.

The thing that I find shocking about this ballot is that "Candidate Disqualified" appears on the ballot before third-pary candidate A (Constitution Party) and third-pary candidate B (Libertarian Party) and long before President Bush/Republican Party.

If the party affiliations are listed "alphabetically", why is there NO PARTY AFFILIATION listed with 3 of the 5 candidates???

Talk about disenfranchising Bush voters (ANYBODY BUT BUSH appears before his name, "read all the other candidate names and see if you just won't please vote for someone other than Bush").

Maybe a lot of Dems will accidently vote for Peroutka or Badnarik this time instead of for Buchanan, as they did in Florida in 2000.

BTW, where is Nader on that ballot?

This is an ABSENTEE ballot, so there is no "slot" or "machine" involved.

Because the Republicrats have succeeded in making the two-party system so entrenched that any other party is considered just "Other"... :-(

Personally, I like New York's system, wherein there are more parties, but "third" parties often endorse the candidates of major parties... so a liberal can vote for Kerry under "Liberal" party to show appreciation for how leftist Kerry has been, for example, instead of just pulling the Dem lever for him. (And if a RINO runs, as another example, the Conservative Party can run a separate candidate.)
