"Going Upriver" takes Vietnam-era film footage, a sound track of 1960s music from Crosby, Stills and Nash, John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan (to name a few), and juxtaposes those in-the-moment images and sounds with poignant interviews of Kerry's Swift Boat crew members and others who came home with a burning need to stop the war.
It raises important questions such as, why would a bright, talented Yale student volunteer to serve in Vietnam, instead of seeking a deferment or having his diplomat father pull a few strings to land him a less risky assignment (as others of his generation did, including more than a few members of the Bush administration).
The answers given in this documentary - idealism and a sense of duty - might seem too pat except for the context provided by the filmmaker. Like many young men and women of his generation, Kerry was inspired by the clarion call of President John F. Kennedy's 1961 inaugural address, "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country."

That "up river" film footage - was that one of Kerry's 8mm. RE-ENACTMENTS? Does anyone know?
You've got to be kidding? Right!
Any good is completely overshadowed by his behavior when he returned.
He met with the enemy in Paris and as far as I am concerned he should have been tried for treason at that point.
Ah, the pervasive power of visual images. How could John Kerry have gotten into Cambodia on Christmas Eve of 1968?
And who is "Jenjhis Kahn"?
How does connecting TELEPHONE wires to genitals deliver much of a shock? Unless this is some new way of having "phone sex".
Does it show FnKerry Running Scared UpRiver while other swift boats and crews were helping the damanged boat and it's crew?
Kerry ran like the COWARD he is!
How many deferments did John Kerry SEEK???
Do any FReepers know the answer to this MSM hidden fact?
He was granted 4 deferments and sought after a FIFTH...
Have you ever held telephone wires when the phone rings? Its not pleasant.
It doesn't explain Kerry's treason, based on the "glowing" (misleading narrative)
How coult this "Yale" graduate go from "patriotism" to TRAITOR and LIE? How was he able to gain entry into Congressional hearings? (Yes, the was the Kennedy connection, McGovern, etc., but WHO, specifically? Anyone know?) How did the TRAITOR, a relatively low ranking officer gain entré to the VC delegate to the Paris Treaty Peace Talks? How do they explain General Giap ( www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1165078/posts ) indicating Kerry prolonged the war, the killing and the torture of POWs?
I *believe* it was. One of the veterans in the Sinclair broadcast last night brought up that point.
"... why would a bright, talented Yale student volunteer to serve in Vietnam?"
It's hard to get past this piece of propaganda, for one thing. Kerry attempted to obtain, and was denied, a student deferment to study in France. He then joined the Naval Reserves. I am unaware that he, at any time, volunteered for duty in Viet Nam. At the time he was assigned to PCF's, they were doing postal patrol, not going up river. When he started getting shot at, he was out of there as fast as some scratches would allow. He came back and trashed the reputations of every fighting man in the military. He saw military service not as "service", but as an "opportunity" to advance his political ambitions. Had the war been popular, I believe we would have seen quite a different JFK. Where am I wrong?
Kim Jung Il has produced dozens of "documentaries" of his "heroics". Apparently we've been blinded by the whining of people who were forced to eat their children under his rule.
A lot of good things came out of nazi Germany too and it only cost the death and suffering of untold millions. Again we must have been blinded.
What a load of crap.
From the article: "The movie ends with an older John Kerry, now a senator, flying over the beautiful countryside of Vietnam. He appears lost in thought. He refers to the war as the formative experience of his life - and concludes that for him, and the nation, it has never really ended.
"It was a moment when this country confronted, and didn't confront, a lot of things," he said. "We haven't finished that confrontation. We haven't learned those lessons yet."
The last quote by John Kerry is the scariest insight into his psyche - He hasn't finished his confrontation or learned the lessons of his treachery.
the footage was not footage that actually happened when Kerry was there. There are more vets who dispute Kerry's version then there are vets who back him up. The real issue is this: What did he do when he got home? He put our troops in danger, he backed the communist plan to end the war, which if followed, would have left our POWs in Vietnam and we would have had to negotiate for their release. This up river crap is just another kerry whitewash. Watch Stolen Honor first and then ask yourselve if all 280 of those vets are lying and why would they? Besides, what they have to say is documented. As to Kerrys time in Vietnam, he didn't have a wound that caused him to miss time, both of his medals are disputed and it is a fact the he wrote the after action report that earned him his bronze star. He didn't spend Christmas in Cambodia and he lied about his purple hearts. He admits that he self inflicted( not intentionally) at least one of his so called wounds and he refuses to release all his records. Are we over reacting? No, but the left would like to put doubt in your mind.
I saw the producer of this film on the Sinclair broadcast. This man should be drug with a pickup till skinned.
He is the great American enemy.
It is not surprising that Karl Marx wrote that history is written by those in charge..and that truth is relative...a lesson the Kerry's have taken to heart...
John F Kerry found a way to write his own history...and the media to sell it to the rubes...
John F Kerry is not 'fit for command' but he has a reputation of being bought and paid for
IMO
One thing JFK did for us was get us into the Vietnam war. Another thing he did was plot the overthrow of the South Vietnamese government, which left the country under chaotic military rule. Ngo Dinh Diem, the prior ruler (who was no prize, to be sure) was murdered the day after the coup. JFK was himself murdered three weeks later.
Yet one other Kennedy legacy -- he gave us Robert Strange McNamara as secretary of Defense: the man most responsible for mismanaging the way and ultimately handing the Communists the victory. There was a bloodbath in Southeast Asia afterwards, and that blood is on McNamara's hands, even as it stains the hands of Tom Hayden, Jane Fonda, John Kerry and other pimps peddling the Soviet line.
You've painted the perfect picture of Kerry. This traitor should be stripped of his American citizenship and given a one-way ticket to his favorite namesake city - Hanoi. The fact that more than 10% of Americans are supporting him is amazing.
Kerry is a communist and his wife is a fascist. If these two get into the Whitehouse, they will use its power in an attempt to destroy private property, the right to bear arms and steal all of America's wealth, while enriching themselves and their Marxist friends.
