ABC13 Eyewitness News (10/21/04 - HOUSTON) — The Houston Federation of teachers says Mrs. Kerry probably didn't realize she insulted millions of teachers when she made the 'real job' comment.

The First Lady actually worked here in Houston at Kennedy Elementary and in other schools across the state. Many in the teachers union are endorsing Senator John Kerry, and union leaders say her statement comes at a bad time.

"Kerry's positions on education are solid, and he does exhibit respect for teachers," said Gayle Fallon with the Houston Federation of Teachers. "He needs to do a little work with his wife as far as respect for teachers."

The teachers union says Heinz-Kerry's campaign appearances will probably be limited after her remarks.

Only liberals can state with a straight face that Kerry is solid. Too bad this one is doing it in our education system.

I hate to break it to Ms. Fallon, but Johnny-boy doesn't wear the pants in his marriage...

NEA is a front for communism: they force teachers to pay union dues so they can push off millions for their liberals causes! Education in America needs help and it won't happen until the NEA is dismantled!

This is true when you understand the real priorities of
the government school system:

1. Perpetuate itself, no matter what the outcomes

2. Spread the approved propaganda of the teachers colleges
and teachers unions

3. Provide increasingly-secure employment for teachers,
and decreasing requirements for results

4. Create excuses for more money

5. Outlaw home-schooling

6. Turn children into docile, compliant serfs who are
incapable of critical independent thought

I see no reason to assume that Kerry opposes any of this.

It is disgusting that Teachers do not like the fact that George Bush is holding them accountable for the education of their students.
They do not like that they have to face their failures in this regard.

Laura Bush worked at a Houston area school named "Kennedy"!!!maybe John Kerry needs to consult the Senior Senator from MA as to whether working at a school named for his bro qualifies as "working".

The irony is absolutely priceless.

Wow, there's an idea. Oops, they've already done that. It's just amazing how well informed and insightful the teacher's union can be.

Just how is President Bush holding teachers accountable for the education of their students?

Despite what the article says, the Houston Federation of Teachers is not a union. Teachers' unions are illegal in Texas.

Furthermore, the HFT is not associated with the NEA.

I don't know if all teachers feel that way. At least here in Texas, Pres. Bush(then governor) pushed for teachers getting a raise and they got it. The state level plays a bigger part in education then does the federal level. When I was a teacher we would join the AFT if we ever needed legal representation. I don't think I ever joined. These organizations don't always represent the opinions of their members, at least not all members.
