DareCare Providers Go on Strike!
SEIU Distribution Pamphlet ^ | 10.19.04 | Mr.Atos

Posted on 10/19/2004 9:45:23 PM PDT by Mr.Atos

What will you do? ...when this is the headline in your local paper informing you that your child's day care provider has staged a walk-out to put pressure on you and your employer to capitualte to demands of an otherwise unrelated Union? It is coming to your State complements of the thugs at the SEIU.

The Local 503 in Portland has been pressuring our provider to join their union. This is the third time, they have approached her, this time leaving her a flyer today to that effect. It states the following:

Speaking Out For The Children

It's time for family Child Care Providers' voices to be heard.

Family Child Care Providers across the country have just started to organize with the SEIU, but they are already making changes in their states:

In 2000, Oregon Homecare Workers worked to change State law so that they could form a union with SEIU.

By Joining with other Child Care Providers in Oregon as part of the SEIU Local 503, providers can make improvements in their working lives, hold elected officials accountable to children, and ensure the quality of child care in the state.

SEIU Local 503 represents 40,000 publicly funded workers in Oregon. SEIU Local 503 has a history of working with human services advocates at the State Capital for increased funding for public services including child care. [rephrase to read properly: increase PUBLIC funding for PRIVATE services]

Providers are speaking out for:

-Affordable health and liability insurance;

-More access to quality child care for low income families;

-Vacation and sick leave;

-Increased access to classes and improved training content;

-Increased enhanced rates that make the extra class time worthwile [Increased Enhanced Rates?;

-Ensuring fair regulations affecting their homes and incomes;

-Respect and recognition for the important work of Child Care Providers;

-A fair process for appealing complaints or registration/certification non-renewal; -Reducing burnout and turnover among Providers.

What Do We Do Next?

Push lawmakers to pass legislation addressing the issues of providers and children.

Do you want the SEIU taking care of your children 50 hours a week? What will you do, when they stage a walk-out for 3 weeks? And afterward? ...After a bitter strike, where you were forced to find alternate childcare at their perceived expense? ... do you trust disgruntled union labor to cherish and protect your children.

Talk about this with YOUR child care provider immediately. Write your Congressman to express your concern.

By all means, let your bitter, self-righteous piety play into their hands. My own mother didn't have that option, with two jobs and 4 kids alone. So next time you get the notion to start preaching your luxury to anothers' necessity, remember our conversation.

Whoa, let's play nice, kids. I don't think Scothia meant that personally. And I don't think you'd disagree that your Mom, given a choice, would have preferred to raise her kids without a day care center involved.

Someone did come across as bitter, all right--you might want to check that chip on your shoulder at the door.

No kidding. They can squeeze out the pups, but they sure can't be bothered to raise 'em. Sheesh.

Bitter!... Well, there are three unrelated sentiments so far on this thread that have more condemnation for parents than for the Union that is extending its reach deeper into the American family with more control of the lives of children. We can have a discussion regarding the propriety and necessity of day care on another thread. Unless you know me personally, WE won't be having that discussion at all. I suggest that Scothia, Prime Choice, and any other self-righteous sophists go and start one. But, if you believe that Unionized Child Care Providers pressuring legislators and businesses for further benefits won't effect you because you have the luxury to stay at home with them, then you are delusional or no one in your household has a job. Take a closer look at their intentions and ask, "Who is paying for all of their demands?" Answer: Public Funding (State Subsidy), and Increased Enhanced Rates (Progressive Pricing... need versus ability). In Oregon, Washington, California, Illinois, Rhode Island, we are already paying for it.

The SEIU is establishing a new government entitlement using the back door, folks.

Daycare for my children is a very huge concern in my life (besides the two jobs I hold to raise my three on my own - I feel for your mother, Mr. Atos, I know we all wish for better circumstances and when life throws you a curve, you do the best you can for the sake of your children.)

To me, day care providers are like family. Once the relationship goes to a strictly business proposition, it loses something, IMHO. I just lost my daycare provider of 7 years due to a housing issue, but she is still "family" to us and we visit as such. Thank the Lord my kids' granmda is in the states at the moment and wants to help with them....for now.

Someone did come across as bitter, all right--you might want to check that chip on your shoulder at the door.

What you said.

Everyone knows - and I mean EVERYONE - that in some circumstances the mother has no choice and she must day care her kids. Even Dr. Laura, the most vociferous supporter of stay at home mothers says this. We are not talking about those mothers - we are talking about those who choose convenience and possessions first while whining how they 'have to work'.

You seem to be talking about that. I'm talking about Unions. (See content of post) Are you suggesting that SEIU Local 503 will make that distinction?... or is it just you and others determined to pass judgment about people you don't know, have never met, and presume to qualify based on your assumptions?

Do tell... what mothers are we referring to being "on strike?" Are you going to preach about the luxuries of preference (namely yours), as well. Or is it your intent that the world be perfectly suited to your perspective? Good luck with that!

Meantime, I submit to you, that the progressive tax system in States like Oregon already places a significant burden on working families such that single income households are difficult to achieve if not impossible to maintain. Nevertheless it is a noble goal... one that can be achieved, but is not automatic. But, I submit to you, that another significant entitlement like subsidized childcare will both increase the access and incentive of the institution of surrogate parenthood on the one hand, while creating a financial burden on families currently striving for or able to fulfill your narrow preference such that they will also be prevented from said goal. So while your busy playing with your semantic bic, you might chill your hide long enough to read the original post and give some consideration to the ramifications of the actions being advocated by the SEIU.

SEIU is the worlds worst union, full of corrupt hired business agents. Many SEIU locals can't even control their own local funds, they are controlled by hired business agents, hired by national.
These day cares should do what everyone does with that union, lock them out and leave them out permanently.
Especialy day care workers. it's mostly low income people who are subsidized by government that use daycares, so just who are these brainless workers holding hostage?

I urge that everyone taking advantage of taxpayers money to babysit their children to use private, in home day care providers, avoid these institutionalized, unionized places, which time and time again has been shown to be magnets for pedophiles.

Indeed! This expansion by the SEIU to the smaller daycare providers is a next incremental step to take over the process entirely. It will put them into a strong position to pressure government and private companies to pay the tab.. using our children as a pry bar. I believe that the ultimate effort is nationalize the process of early childcare in a similar way as education and health care. Our county in Oregon passed a localized income tax for education recently that further burdened citizen; gluing both mother and father into the workforce away from the children. Each new $100 dollars of taxes separates parents from their children 5-10 hours. And as Momfirst rightly pointed out, Unionization removes the extended family nature from the relationship entirely.

Being a parent, I know how hard day care providers work. The ones that take care of my child are very good at what they do and work very hard. Their job is further complicated by trying to please everybody, including very protective and nurturing parents, all the time - an impossible task. So in my relationship with them, I give them a great deal of leeway in what they do.

(Side note - I want to clarify is that my wife and I put our little girl in day care for matters that are deeper than simply Luxury and Convenience. Where we could afford to live on only one of our incomes would threaten the short- and long-term Health, Safety, and Welfare of my daughter. On THAT we will not compromise. We have placed ourselves in such an environment/situation where we COULD live there on only one income, but only for a relatively short period of time.)

What it comes down to is how I feel about unions in general. It goes without saying that employers should manage their employees in an ethical and compassionate manner. Unions are, IMO, a result of misunderstanding between labor and management. Maybe I'm naive, but if each party could clearly understand the other, necessary give-and-take between them would be as a result of mutual respect, not as a result of legal mandate or "us against them." We're all in this capitalist system together, people. Let's compete with each other to be the best we can be, but let's also be team-builders in our daily actions.
