ABDURAHMAN ALAMOUDI SENTENCED TO 23 YEARS IN PRISON IN TERROR FINANCING CASE
-- Sentencing Follows ICE, IRS, FBI Investigation in Northern Virginia --

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- A U.S. citizen has been sentenced to 23 years in jail on charges related to his activities in the United States and abroad with nations and organizations that have ties to terrorism, the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security announced today. Abdurahman M. Alamoudi, a naturalized U.S. citizen who was born in Eritrea, was sentenced to 276 months in jail by District Judge Claude M. Hilton in federal court in Alexandria, Virginia, this morning.

On July 30, 2004, Alamoudi pleaded guilty to three federal offenses: one count of violating the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), which imposes terrorism-related sanctions prohibiting unlicensed travel to and commerce with Libya; one count of false statements made in his application for naturalization; and a tax offense involving a long-term scheme to conceal from the IRS his financial transactions with Libya and his foreign bank accounts and to omit material information from the tax returns filed by his charities.

As part of a plea agreement, Alamoudi agreed to cooperate fully and truthfully in any and all investigations, including an ongoing investigation into a plot to assassinate an ally in the war against terrorism. Under the terms of that plea agreement, Alamoudi also agreed that he should be sentenced under the terrorism provision of the federal sentencing guidelines, and he agreed to forfeit all proceeds from his illegal dealings with Libya, which total at least $910,000, including $340,000 seized from him in the United Kingdom.

Alamoudi became a naturalized citizen in 1996. He is the founder and former executive director of the American Muslim Council (AMC), the founder of the American Muslim Foundation (AMF), and was an influential member of other Islamic political and charitable organizations.

Court documents filed in conjunction with his plea agreement describe how, from November 1995 to September 2003, Alamoudi devised a scheme to obtain money from Libya and other sources overseas for transmission into the United States without attracting the attention of federal immigration, customs and law enforcement officials. Alamoudi admitted to participating in a comprehensive scheme to conceal prohibited financial transactions related to Libya, his travel to Libya, and financial transactions designed to evade currency reporting requirements, among other things.

Alamoudi made at least 10 trips to Libya, many lasting as long as five days. According to court documents, while in Libya, Alamoudi participated in meetings with Libyan government officials. Initially, during a meeting on March 13, 2003, Alamoudi and Libyan government officials discussed creating "headaches" and disruptions in Saudi Arabia. As the scheme continued, however, Alamoudi learned that the actual objective was the assassination of Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah. Alamoudi participated in recruiting participants for this plot by introducing the Libyans to two Saudi dissidents in London and facilitating the transfer of hundreds of thousands of dollars of cash from the Libyans to those dissidents to finance the plot.

Alamoudi has been in U.S. custody since his arrest shortly after arriving at Washington Dulles International Airport on Sept. 28, 2003. Alamoudi intentionally withheld information about his Libya travel in response to a question from a Customs officer about which countries he had traveled to his itinerary.

"The government's investigations are designed to prevent acts of terrorism by obtaining cooperation and developing intelligence," said Attorney General John Ashcroft. "The sentence handed down in the Alamoudi case today shows that the system works: a terrorist facilitator has been sentenced to jail and we have reason to expect that through his cooperation, we will obtain intelligence that will assist us in our ongoing efforts to advance these critical investigations."

"This is a clear victory in the war against terrorism," said U.S. Attorney Paul J. McNulty of the Eastern District of Virginia. "Terrorists need money to operate, and the defendant was caught in the act of financing their deadly schemes."

Michael Garcia, Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), stated: "The sentence handed down today reflects the seriousness of Alamoudi's crimes. His conviction is the result of an extensive joint investigation by ICE, the FBI and IRS, in which agents tracked suitcases stuffed with cash, unearthed Swiss bank accounts, and documented meetings with shadowy figures around the globe. This case demonstrates how ICE is applying its legal authorities under the Joint Terrorism Task Force umbrella to address threats to our homeland."

"The ability to detect and analyze complex financial information from numerous sources is essential to the government's fight against terror," said Nancy Jardini, Chief, IRS Criminal Investigation. "The IRS has committed extensive civil and criminal resources to shut down terrorist financing from domestic sources, including charities."

The case is being investigated by agents of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Department of Homeland Security, Criminal Investigations at the Internal Revenue Service, and the Washington Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Gordon D. Kromberg and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven P. Ward, on detail from the Tax Division of the Department of Justice, prosecuted the case.

23 years in jail as part of a plea agreement? That doesn't sound right to me.

[Abdurahman Alamoudi: A] A Slick Islamist Heads to Jail

Read the plea agreement (or at least the first part of it). The article would have you believe Alamoudi has really been given the maximum sentence and will actually serve it...despite the fact that he's cooperating. I just don't believe it. I think he'll serve 3 to 5.

Hey, he was just spreading the luv, Muhammad style.

And now he'll have almost 20 years to convert prison inmates to Islam. These guys are a disease no matter where they go. Terrorist prisoners should be confined.

These need to be treason prosecutions with the aim of imposing the death penalty. No moo slime is going to let 19 years in jail get in the way of his jihad... they'll just take over the jail and turn it into an Islamic mini-state, anyway.

Divine justice would see their lifeless bodies mixed in with pig guts and dumped in Saddam's mass graves in place of the bodies of the innocents who died as a result of Arab and Islamic tyranny.

$inator HildeBea$t will be upset that one of her former donors will be in jail.

I'm glad you caught that as well.

An early president of the executive board of the AMC was Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin, formerly known as H. Rap Brown

FYI - In 2002, H. Rap Brown was found guilty of killing a Fulton County, Georgia Sheriff's deputy and wounding another in a gunbattle at his store. He was sentenced to life imprisonment. link

Thanks; I'm downloading the plea agreement now. Some details on it seemed to change over the course of the newspaper coverage of the story, particularly with respect to what Alamoudi was actually confessing to in terms of the Qaddafi plot. Some articles described him as admitting involvement in the plot as part of the plea agreement, others as denying involvement but admitting the plot existed. The press release on his sentencing seems to implicate him in the plot.

When, in the name of all that's holy, are people going to realize that putting terrorists in jail is stupid, stupid, stupid?

How long will it be before some other diaper-heads take some hostages and demand his release?

Death penalty. Carried out swiftly.

How long until this guy gets out for good behavior? Why, at least, hasn't his citizenship been stripped and why isn't he kicked outta the USA? Why do taxpayers have to support him any longer? This is just giving him a new job assignment to recruit more.

7.62 x 51mm you are correct, this is war - it's them or us.

This is really funny to read, its also a bit sad that some ppl like you guys are just ignorant and arrogant at the same time, u talk about terrorism and just relate it to one group of society, more specifically Muslims, when u forget that some ppl from your own blood or maybe relatives of urs are just as messed up as some muslims are, but yet u guys dont like to generalize upon yourselves, for ex: the guy who bombed that day care building in Oklahoma, i dont recall his name n e how when that whole thing happend and there were no suspects all the stupid irrational ppl like some here, pointed to muslims and with no further investigation blamed it all on them, "oh those muslim terrorist, blah blah blah" and it was called a terrorist act, BUT when they found the suspect and they realized that he was from the same "group" of society they said that he was mentally unstable and he had issues in his life, and there are many examples that i can mention here, but wouldn't want to make u read for hours and hours, WAKE UP americans, and stop to think for a second, aren't you guys who invaded countries and killed many innocent children and ppl just to fulfill ur own needs, and that act "Of course" is not terrorism, well guess what, terrorism is something or an act that terrorizes ppl and it applies to everyone not just "AMERICANS" or shall we go back in time and say "WHITES" you see prejudice and injustice is in your bloods, you guys are infected with it, but yet you think that its the right thing... remember that whole deal about whites and colored ppl? watch documentaries or movies that might give u a sense of the truth, dont just listen to the news and make your own judgments, you think your the best out of all nations and that your the elite of this human race, YOU KNOW WHY? cuz you dont know n e thing about history, but one thing for sure is that no one nation stands strong for ever, there is a time for everyone, so dont do n e thing stupid that might come back at you later on, read history books about the world around you, not just the US HISTORY books, try and educate yourself about other cultures and religions instead of making stupid judgments...

I know you’re a one-hit-wonder, but I’ll reply to you anyway. It wasn’t a day care, it was a Federal Building, and the bombers were Timothy McVeigh, who was sympathetic to Iraq’s Saddam Hussein...and Terri Nichols. The reason no one generalizes is because there aren’t thousands of McVeighs and Nichols out there blowing up targets. You might notice that the case is the one case always cited by folks trying to defend Islamists by implying “everybody does it” when in fact “everybody” does not do it. In fact some groups don’t do it at all.
