MATTHEWS: Let me ask you the question aboutthis is going to cause some trouble with peoplebut as an historian now and studying the Revolutionary War as it was fought out in the South in those last years of the War, insurgency against a powerful British force, do you see any parallels between the fighting that we did on our side and the fighting that is going on in Iraq today?
CARTER: Well, one parallel is that the Revolutionary War, more than any other war up until recently, has been the most bloody war weve fought. I think another parallel is that in some ways the Revolutionary War could have been avoided. It was an unnecessary war.
Had the British Parliament been a little more sensitive to the colonials really legitimate complaints and requests the war could have been avoided completely, and of course now we would have been a free country now as is Canada and India and Australia, having gotten our independence in a nonviolent way.
I think in many ways the British were very misled in going to war against America and in trying to enforce their will on people who were quite different from them at the time.

Thank you for correcting this glaring mistake by Jimmy Carter. The Civil War was indeed the bloodiest war in American history.
You've got to say this for the Brits -- they learned their lesson. They never had another major uprising by an European, English speaking colony.
If Jimmy had just been a little more sensitive to the rabbit's situation (swimming) and complaints ( it was swimming, for God's sake ! ) the beating he gave it with that oar would not have had to take place.. and subsequent rationalizations that the rabbit was "attacking" him would not have been necessary..
By that standard, the Civil War wins hands down. By your logic, a duel common to the time is the most bloody; if both combatants hit each other, the spilt blood stat is 100%.
I wondered if the term, 'annals of history', was correct in this circumstance.
You both set me straight, one right after the other!
ROTFL
Remember when Ford denied the Communist dominated areas of Europe like Poland during the debate in 1976...that's a big reason why we had Carter.
Nonviolent, negotiated peace has NEVER done anything positive for mankind. It has ALWAYS led to a more blood battle later on than would have been necessary.
In contrast, just under 1 million people (Union and Confederate) were casualties of the Civil War. The US population then was about 34 million. So about three percent of the population was killed or wounded in that conflict, an increase of an order of magnitude over the percentages for the American Revolution.
Now young people can understand how the Islam-fascist seeds were sown, when the Ayatollah was allowed to return to Iran from France in 1979. Carter is the worst President of the 20th century.
That how this lunacy began.
I have sent this to Drudge. Hope he puts it on his webpage and exposes Jimmuh's dementia!
yeah Jimmah.. America would be a popcorn fart like Canada and we'd all be speaking German by now.. England did'nt beat the Germans WE DID... TWICE...
If Carter had his way, we wouldn't be a country at all. We'd be subjugated to the Euro socialist world government crowd.
Jimmah Cahter is an idiot!! Come on! This has to be a joke!
I am not sure how you get this. The recognized number for battle deaths in the Revolutionary War was 4,435; the population was 2.1 million in 1770 (some sources use 2.2 million), which gives about 0.002, or two battle deaths per 1,000 citizens. Total casualties were 10,623, or 0.005, equalling 5 casualties per 1000 people.
The recognized number for battle deaths in the War Between the States is 184,594 from a population of 31,000,000 in 1860, which gives 0.006, or 6 battle deaths per 1,000 citizens. Total casualties were 970,227, or 0.031, equalling 31 casualties per 1000 people.
The only percentage that I can think that was higher in the Revolutionary War was that 40% of our total casualties were deaths, unlike the War Between the States where it was in the range of 20%.
Here is a page that seems to have its numbers correct on a cursory look.
Look at my tagline...
I am 45 years old. I vividly remember the horrible shape this country was in win Carter was President and how impotent he was. People were making fun of the US all over the world, we were a paper tiger, and it encouraged a nation like Iran to go into our embassy and take it over. We watched impotently as our fellow citizens were made a mockery to the world.
IMO Jimmy Carter was probably the worst President in our history...by a wide margin...
Then came Reagan...
This is true. The reason we fought was because the British were taxing us but not allowing us to have representation in Parliment. They ignored that and eventually we got fed up and declared our independence. Worked out better that looney George couldn't see the forest for the trees and thought of us as slaves.
Bloodiest wars - 50,000 wounded or killed in three days at Gettysburg. 400,000 in WWII, 54,000 in Vietnam.
This guy is a real idiot.
I remember the high unemployment - oil embargo when we could only fill up on odd or even days - high deficit - mortgages around 14 or 15% - credit card rates in low 20%'s - and then the hostage taking. If we had immediately responded we would not be where we are today.
Of course in Clinton had responded in the 90's we wouldn't be where we are today.
My God, considering the man is from freaking GEORGIA, you'd think he'd remember just how bloody the Recent Unpleasantness (aka The War of Northern Aggression) was. Chickamauga, Atlanta, Sherman's March to the Sea? Hello, Jimmah? Six hundred thousand dead, you sorry-assed excuse for a human being!
Idjit.

Yes and remember inflation was at like 22 percent? If memory serves me right the mortgage rates actually went up to 18-22 percent - I was a Realtor near that time...
Jimmy Carter was unnecessary.
