October 19, 2004 -- Ronald Reagan's daughter is suing the Salvation Army, charging it canceled her lucrative speaking gig because of her outspoken support of stem-cell research. In papers filed in Manhattan Supreme Court, Patti Davis says the Salvation Army's cancellation of her $15,000 speaking engagement because of her moral beliefs is "a wanton, willful and malicious act."
"It was obviously very upsetting to her," said Davis' lawyer, Lawrence Fabian.
Mike Watters, the lawyer for the local California Salvation Army chapter that had planned the event, denied the charge. He said his clients decided not to hire Davis after seeing a videotape of one of her speeches. "They just decided she wasn't their cup of tea," he said.
He added his clients didn't breach their contract with Davis because they never signed one.

You misunderstood me. I was asking joybellsinnj if it's common to pay celebrities to speak, that's all. I was not at all making any comment about worker's salaries. I hope everyone understood that.

I do agree that many charities consume a lot of contribution dollars as internal operating "expenses" (salaries) and to further fundraising efforts. At the worst of that spectrum you will find charities that spend over 50% of the money received just trying to get more money. the united way, is pretty fat. i have heard numbers from 25% to 40% of the contributions go to fundraising and salaries. united way, of course, distributes its monies to the actual charitable organizations and is not much more than a fundraising organization. at the other end of the spectrum, there are a lot of "faith based" charities where 95 to 97 cents of every dollar given goes to help those in need.

I think it was Mark Twain that said, "It is a poor man who knows of only one way to spell a word." Or something like that.

Sueing the Sally Army? "A wanton, willful and malicious act."?? She's got to be joking.
That ranks on the same level as taking away a baby's toy or sticking out your foot to trip up an elderly person.
Mind you, the SA must also be losing their marbles to have even considered giving this clueless broad $15,000 to open her pie hole. What a waste of money.
Patti must really be desperate for her to set the attack lawyers on the SA.

He was a great president -- but his second family didn't turn out so well. The first was fine.

The only army a lefty would wage war upon: one without any guns.

Some conservative lady should take up this cause and show their good nature, like Laura Ingraham or Ann Coulter.....but I doubt if the Salvation Army could afford their speaking fees.

Why would the Salvation Army pay people to speak. I understand paying expenses, but don't these people do these charity things for free, because you know, IT'S A CHARITY?????
I was horrified a few months ago to learn that the MAJORITY of celebrities are paid BIG to attend these charity functions which we often see their tabloid photos taken from. They get paid big money just to SHOW UP, and even more if they speak for 2 minutes! It is sickening! They try to come across as doing so much for people and it is ALL about themselves, money, and being SEEN at the right events. The thought is that if they attend, more of us "regular folks" will attend and whip out our checkbooks.
To: Hildy
My deepest apologies. I did misread your post. :-/
Now that I've kicked myself and read it right, yours is a good question.
