You misunderstood me. I was asking joybellsinnj if it's common to pay celebrities to speak, that's all. I was not at all making any comment about worker's salaries. I hope everyone understood that.

I do agree that many charities consume a lot of contribution dollars as internal operating "expenses" (salaries) and to further fundraising efforts. At the worst of that spectrum you will find charities that spend over 50% of the money received just trying to get more money.

the united way, is pretty fat. i have heard numbers from 25% to 40% of the contributions go to fundraising and salaries. united way, of course, distributes its monies to the actual charitable organizations and is not much more than a fundraising organization. at the other end of the spectrum, there are a lot of "faith based" charities where 95 to 97 cents of every dollar given goes to help those in need.

Why would the Salvation Army pay people to speak. I understand paying expenses, but don't these people do these charity things for free, because you know, IT'S A CHARITY?????
I was horrified a few months ago to learn that the MAJORITY of celebrities are paid BIG to attend these charity functions which we often see their tabloid photos taken from. They get paid big money just to SHOW UP, and even more if they speak for 2 minutes! It is sickening! They try to come across as doing so much for people and it is ALL about themselves, money, and being SEEN at the right events. The thought is that if they attend, more of us "regular folks" will attend and whip out our checkbooks.
