Campaign literature mistakenly sent home with third graders

Campaign literature mistakenly sent home with third graders

Presidential debate number three is in the books, and most polls show the race a dead heat. Thursday, the Missoula School District studied how documents promoting the democratic ticket ended up going home to parents of third-graders at Hawthorne Elementary.

School officials are already apologizing for what they call an honest mistake. Hawthorne Principal Steve McHugh: "It's a whoops, it's a mistake. We're sorry -- Missoula, we're sorry."

This was not meant for parent's eyes. But, pro-Democrat literature accidentally went home with third-grade students from Hawthorne Elementary.

McHugh: "It was definitely a mistake. Certainly we're sorry that it happened, we're certainly not trying as a school district or Hawthorne school to tell people who to vote for."

The paperwork is from the Missoula Unified Political Action Committee for Education. It supports state and national democratic candidates for office. Officials say the information was intended for teachers, not students.

McHugh: "It is very clear to people in the district that work for the district that you are not to do anything that will try to persuade anybody when you're working for the school district during the day."

It's a simple error that shows how careful educators have to be to keep political views out of school discussion. Both parents and school officials say they understand why this happened, and believe there was no intentional wrongdoing. Principal McHugh says he apologized to the 14 families that received the paperwork.

I am a Federal employee (yes I actually work quite hard at saving your money), if I were to distribute a single partisan flier I would go to jail. Not just fired, but be arrested and taken away.

The only "mistake" they really are sorry for is that they got caught.

Is it proper for partisan campaign material to be on public school grounds in the first place?

I'm a Federal employee too! Guess there are actually 2 or 3 conservative Federal employees in existence (and Freepers to boot!). . . I'm pretty sure I'm the only Republican in my entire (SF) office.

If district materials were used to make these flyers, even just for teachers, it would be a hugh, series matter.

That was basically my point, I would not ever consider to bring anything in the least bit partisan to my office, and I never talk about politics around my coworkers.

Double ditto!

The mistake was letting the parents find out how much campaigning is going on, at the taxpayers expense!

Someone should be fired. Today.

This shouldn't be in the schools at all, but of course the socialist union NAE must keep employees under their thumb. Imagine if the Republican's had campaign literature passed at a school?

He's right, they are sorry. A sorry excuse for a school system.

Here's a possible explanation:

They were sent to the school's teachers union rep, placed in his box and were distributed to his class without that teacher actually looking to see what it was.

It's a stretch, but it's possible, I think, maybe.

Oh, my! An educational PAC supporting Dems. How surprising!

And shouldn't that be a capital 'D' democratic? I wonder how Reporter John Langeler will be voting? And does he really think Democrats are democrats?

..."pro-Democrat literature accidentally went home with third-grade students from Hawthorne Elementary."

is there any other type of literature that comes home from
public schools?

This wouldn't be nearly so funny except my 5th grade daughter told me last week they have been studying the election prior to the classes mock vote.

"Mom!" she whispered in a conspiratorial voice, "Nobody's gonna vote for Kerry!"

The kids now have to return it in order to receive the condoms they were supposed to be given.
