Hey we all need to be praying for the country! Maybe a little extra for certain areas of the nationa wouldn't hurt. We have a lot more serious issues in this nation than the who, when, why, what, where of voting.

I'm a Texan too, I just don't live there anymore.

Glad to meet ya' 8^)

I've often wondered who really controls this area. I've emailed all sorts of articles to the local media and it's like they have a muzzle on when it comes to Sen King. You've got a right to be mad. I hope the whole area learns about this.

I wish that at the very least we could see honesty prevail. When I hear things like this it makes you wonder if the mob is in control.

If this doesn't speak volumes, I don't know what does!! Remember all the whoop-de-doo to get modernized voting equipment after the 2000 elections? Read the caption for the pic....

During early voting Monday morning at the Duval County Supervisor of Elections Office, Leslie Goller (left) attorney for the Duval County Demoratic Party, tells Congresswoman Corrine Brown that she needs to switch from the touch screen voting to the paper ballot in case of a recount. Brown switched.

When you post stuff like this, you should post the name of the STATE, so people will know you mean Florida.

Didn't want to alter the title, state is in the keywords.

I believe it is acceptable/expected to put the state postal abbreviation in brackets at the end [FL].

Corrine Brown has been banging the drum to get him fired for months. I think I read either yesterday or this morning that Jeb said he was 'not' going to fire Stafford.

I don't understand. Duval county uses optically scanned paper ballots. Doesn't it?

That's what they used at the precint where I vote. I didn't really think about why they have touch screen downtown. Good point, wonder why?

I'm really irked about the Dem lawyer instructing to use a paper ballot. Not that I mind a paper ballot, it's just the principle of the thing. Such a ruckus was made to get this equipment and now they don't want to use it.

Optically scanned paper ballots have a nearly perfect record. If the touch screen machines have any screw-ups this year, they are doomed. I personally think they have promise, but not the way they are being done.

Can you explain a little what you mean by 'the way they're being done'?

They are being installed and managed by democrats, who seem not to know where the power switch is.

In 2002, at least one machine recorded no votes.

Already this year, one machine has made news as non-operational

There is no audit trail, no backup, no ability to recount, and no understanding of why they should be trusted. Since they have failed rather spectacularly already, there is no reason to trust them.

These problems are not even related to the potential for tampering or fruad.

I would love to see a system where something like fingerprints or iris scan uniquely qualifies every voter (not attaching this info to the vote itself). But this is decades away.

In the meantime, optical scanners are cheap and foolproof. The ballot boxes count the number of ballots cast for everyone to see. The ballots themselves are easy to hand count. It's easy to have poll watchers from each party verify the chain of custody.

If the touch screen machines have any screw-ups this year, they are doomed.

It'll more likely be the voter that screws up, not the machine, though I doubt that all machines will work properly.

I remember in 2000 when Katherine Harris' lawyer, Joe Klock, told the Supreme Court that whatever ruling they come up with must begin with voter instructions at the voting booth. Now, it seems, that we have have to contend with voters who can't even make it to the right precinct, let alone the right booth.

Actually, when the touch screen machines work properly, they prevent a lot of voter screw-ups. They seem too complex, however, for the people who have to run them. Not to mention, they haven't earned the necessary trust.

I think they should practice on the self-checkout lanes at Winn-Dixie before going to vote.

Disgusting. We actually have had black voters who have come in and registered for the first time because they can't stand Corrine Brown, and they have suddenly realized that they can start voting these people out.

I see what you mean now. It always seemed to me that the touch screen would not be the best method. You have some very good points.
