The Atlas Society received a note just two days ago from the Baldwin Entertainment Group. This is the company that is now producing the Atlas Shrugged movie (Howard Baldwin founded the company after the shakeup at Crusader). This is what he says: "...everything is on track and [the movie] hasnt been held up one bit.... I assure you that this will be a big movie and IT WILL GET MADE." I will keep you posted on the progress--whenever there is progress to report! Cheers, Patrick Stephens Webmaster, The Atlas Society

Excellent! Can't wait!
Doesn't sound very promising, in terms of getting it made.
I don't think it will translate well to the screen without a LOT of core changes.
Just the central focus on the railway industry will be hard enough to deal with, in terms of writing a compelling script.
Yeah, but we all know
it will have kids like these two
as Dagny and John . . .
They've either got to frame it in the late 40's or else revamp the entire technology plot along modern lines. They've also got to edit down Galt's speech. It will take a master screenwriter.
I actually think Tom Hanks would make a great Galt. Years ago I thought Faye Dunaway would make a great Dagny, but she's too old now.

I don't know who that actor is, but he's too young and too soft looking to be John Galt. I think Antonio Banderas would be a good choice for Franciso d'Anconia and Dolph Lundgren should play Ragnar Danneskjold. I thought about Harrison Ford for Hank Rearden, but he might be too old. And I think Kelsey Grammer would be a good James Taggart.
Josh Hartnett
Thanks. I don't see movies very often so I'm not sure who any of the new, young actors and actresses are.

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY, May 13, 2003The Atlas Society is pleased to announce that a new project to film Atlas Shrugged has just been launched. Crusader Entertainment, LLC, a Beverly Hills-based production company, announced on May 12 that it had acquired the film rights to Ayn Rand's great novel. The company also announced that it has signed veteran screenwriter James V. Hart, whose film credits include the ambitious adaptation of Carl Sagan's science fiction novel Contact, to write the screenplay.
yuck...Josh Harnett is not a good actor
Not terribly impressive there. They might want to keep looking.
I've seen a few movies with him in it. He's ok, but I wouldn't say he burned up the screen.
Listening to some of Rush's monologues lately lead me to believe that Rush would be a natural as John Galt.
I was thinking Alexander Godunov for Ragnar, and Keith Carridine for Hank Reardon. Dennis Franz as James Taggart, Patricia Heaton as Dagny and Harvey Keitel for John Galt. I just got through watching Antonio Bandreas in the 13th warrior. He would be perfect as Francisco.
Yeah. I thought "Contact" was about the WORST film ever, in every way possible. It was amoral -- come on, a man of the cloth (Matthew McConahay) who immediately hops in the sack with the leading gal (Jody Foster) with nary a pause or thought of repentance or regret? The whole story was bleak, and absolutely unconstructive. It was also boring. I remember a clever headline spoofing the classic "Alien" on a review panning "Contact." It read: "In space, nobody can year you snore."
Atlas Shrugged is one of my all time favorite books but, truth to be told, I don't think that Ayn Rand translates well to any other medium. In order to do the film justice AND get the story told in the average time alloted for a feature film, they will have to edit it so much that, at best, the story will be choppy and not be the same one that Ayn Rand wrote.
In addition, I don't believe that the mainstream theatergoers will "get it". There are no car chases, explosions, slo-mo blood and gore extravaganzas in the story to keep them glued to their seats. There is only a story that is too deep and intense to understand, not to mention Rand's philosophy.
What I suspect that Hollywood will do is make the film into a love triangle between Dagny, John Galt and Dagnar. That should have Ayn Rand spinning in her grave.
How about Clint Eastwood as John Galt??!! Okay, he's a little old .. but he was doing expressly "politically incorrect" films (the Dirty Harry series) LONG before the term "politically correct" had even been coined. I think he's a lot like John Galt. Maybe Mel Gibson would be a good John Galt, too. Or better, Bruce Willis.
