How very sad for the boy's family.
I recall getting thumped in the forehead by my Dad's 45 colt new service revolver when I was about 5 or 6. (Yes there was beer involved)

The only time I ever fired a weapon, i was with a friend of mine (we were both 19 or 20) and he took me to his Uncle's property north of Gridley, CA.
My friend gave me a shot gun (I have no idea what kind) and told me how to stand and hold it. I remember his last words being, "Brace your self, it's got some kick to it."
Well, I'm a big guy. So I'm thinking, "Yeah, yeah... a little kick, I can take it."
So I aimed at the target he set up, pulled the trigger, and yup... you guessed it, landed flat on my back. (Missed the target, too)

My dad purposefully had me fire his .357 Magnum when I was about 6. I had no idea how to hold it and I had it fairly close to the noggin.
Thing reared it up and gave me a slam to the forehead and gave me a big lump and big bruise.
My dad said, "Well, there you go. Now you know not to pick one of those things up like you know how to use it."
Good lesson.
