The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

ATLANTA (CNN) -- As more than one billion Muslims prepare to celebrate Ramadan, terror experts are mixed about whether the holy month is a tool for recruiting terrorists.

Some terrorism experts and Islamic scholars say Ramadan gives extremists an opportunity to enlist new recruits.

"It's a time which can be exploited by radical clerics to motivate individuals into taking action on the basis they are somehow serving their religion," says terror expert M.J. Gohel.

And analysts see another temptation for terrorists: exploiting the Battle of Badr, a symbolic date in Muslim history, which falls near the U.S. presidential election.

Both Fox News and Rush are reporting the "state" vs "nation" wording of the threat and if that saturates in time, that may cast things in a different light.

I don't personally believe he is referring to specific states in the U.S.

I'm not sure why everyone has been saying his message is benign. He hit all his usual key points. Iraq, Israel/Palestine, sanctions, death of civilians at the hands of the U.S. I honestly feel that this message was his way of clearing his conscience before the next attack occurs. The fact that we saw a more subdued man is scary to me for some reason.

I’m worried about tomorrow. I can’t recall how many times I have seen people post ‘if not this time, they are done.’ I won’t say that myself, but tomorrow is such a big-stakes day that I find it hard to believe that UBL wouldn’t want something pulled off.

The Azzam tape has me very perplexed. If the reports that Adnan Shukrijumah was the one interviewing are correct… bad news. These 2 guys alone could cause a lot of trouble IMO.

FBI report lists Nevada as prime terror target

The FBI says Nevada is a prime target for terrorists.

A report given by the FBI to Nevada's Department of Homeland Security finds McCarran Airport, the Hoover Dam, and an Army ammunition depot in Hawthorne help make the Silver State vulnerable to attack.

The report also cites Carson City, the Fallon Naval Air Station and Yucca Mountain shipments as other possible targets.

The FBI says there is no specific threat against Nevada now.

A senior official of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) quietly visited India last week to alert intelligence agencies about the possibility of Osama bin Laden sneaking into India, official sources said on Monday.

The Pakistan-based official also sought Indian assistance for joint operations by Indian and US forces to nab the world's most wanted fugitive if he crossed over from northeastern Pakistan, the sources said.

The official's visit followed reported spotting of Bin Laden in northeastern Pakistan, close to the Pakistan-China-India border tri-junction, they added.

The sources said the FBI official met senior officials of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), Intelligence Bureau (IB), Border Security Force (BSF) and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP).

They said the FBI official appeared to have information about the impending release of the latest videotape by Bin Laden, carrying yet another warning against the US.

A few days later, on Oct 29, an unidentified person delivered the tape to the office of Al-Jazeera television in Islamabad.

In the tape, Bin Laden warned the American people: "Your security is not in the hands of Kerry or Bush or Al Qaeda." He was referring to the Democratic nominee for the presidential election John Kerry and President George W Bush.

"Your security is in your own hands. Do not play with our security, and spontaneously you will secure yourself," Bin Laden said.

The FBI official also offered to share intelligence with Indian agencies about areas of common interest like Afghanistan, the sources said.

Defence sources on Monday dismissed as "highly exaggerated" news reports that an Indian Air Force spy plane had spotted Bin Laden's convoy in northeastern Pakistan.

"For all you know, Osama may be living in Karachi," the Pakistani port city where many of his senior Al Qaeda and Taliban activists had found safe houses, one official said.

They noted that from his appearance in the videotape, Bin Laden looked healthy and not like someone on the run.

I was doing some more searching on this 'state' thing.

I'm wondering why MEMRI and al Jazeera are running different translations for that line.

Fox was reporting the jihadi websites were putting this spin on it. And the MEMRI article seemed pretty emphatic on that, and they have not been alarmists in the past (they are the ones who have tended to be skeptical of purported jihadi threats if they did not meet certain criteria). They said the word is never used to describe nations, only provinces or states. Also the context is an issue. Made a point not to mention any other nations by name in a threatening context (except Israel which was an indirect reference). Sweden was mentioned as not being threatened (taking that with a grain of salt). However, U.S. states were explicitly mentioned in the context of Florida 2000 and governors of the states. His family has a long history here. His father and older brother both died here and he had many family members here pre-9/11. He didn't just fall off the turnip (or pomegranate) truck.

He was trying to convey confidence and authority. The offer of a truce was not a sign of weakness. There is a difference between campaigning and governing. The fatigues and Kalashnikov were about campaigning. The desk and the religious garb are about governing. It was a "pre-inaugural speech".

I would have recommended the Plymouth map as well. All models are in good agreement with the rain in the eastern half of the Midwest down the Ohio River valley and more significant weather in the lower Mississippi River valley. The New England states will see light rain spreading across as the day goes on with cool temps.

Watching for anything out of the ordinary. I find myself watching the ordinary. I take note of abandon vehicles, especially near bridges. Every box truck or unattended package is a potential threat.

Sweden was mentioned as not being threatened

On another thread, there is concern that the Sweden mention may be a code. After all, the emergency number for the Baltic countries is 112 - like 911=9/11 and therefore mean 11/2. Check out this thread. Sorry I can't format the link right.
