The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

ATLANTA (CNN) -- As more than one billion Muslims prepare to celebrate Ramadan, terror experts are mixed about whether the holy month is a tool for recruiting terrorists.

Some terrorism experts and Islamic scholars say Ramadan gives extremists an opportunity to enlist new recruits.

"It's a time which can be exploited by radical clerics to motivate individuals into taking action on the basis they are somehow serving their religion," says terror expert M.J. Gohel.

And analysts see another temptation for terrorists: exploiting the Battle of Badr, a symbolic date in Muslim history, which falls near the U.S. presidential election.

Keeping up with the thread and working long hours. I've overdue to take another puppy picture. The little girl has her eyes open now and is making first attempts to get on her feet.

I have a COP (citizens on patrol) meeting at the police department this evening. My wife is a dispatcher for the department. We (and the fire chief) are a little concerned about the lax attitude toward a formal incident command structure and absence of an emergency operations center in the area. In that message, the poster must be referring to the nervous sweaty guy coming over the Canadian border into the U.S. on 12/31/99. The plot was to bomb LAX, the major international airport in Los Angeles (you probably already know that but I am writing it anyway). An alert and suspicious U.S. border patrol lady basically nabbed him.

Here's a different version of that story:

     Toy bomb kills four students near Wana

      WANA: A toy bomb, shaped like a football killed four students, aged 8 to 12 years in Sarwakai sub-division in South Waziristan on Friday.

Among the dead were two brothers, Sherullah and Babar Khan, sons of Aziz Khan. Eyewitnesses said one of them had kicked the toy football, triggering an explosion that killed him and his brother on the spot.

Two other students, Ahad Khan, son of Nurjan, and Shah Hussain, son of Muhammad Hashim, were critically wounded in the blast and were rushed to hospitals in Tank and Dera Ismail Khan. They succumbed to their injuries on the way.

A fifth student, Sher Ghulam, son of Sherbad Khan, was seriously injured and had to be transported to distant Dera Ismail Khan for treatment. With his leg badly wounded, the unfortunate boy was hospitalised at the District Headquarters Hospital in the city.

All the students belonged to the Mahsud sub-tribe of Shamankhel, which a day earlier had decided through its elders to allow Army to move in their area and deny sanctuaries to the militants.

Villagers and government officials said the students were on their way to school from Bangashwala when the incident took place. All were students of the Shaoor Primary School, located near the militants-infested Barwand town.

Eyewitnesses said the football, containing explosives, was lying by the roadside and placed nearby was a currency note of Rs 100. The two objects aroused the curiosity of the children. As they walked closer to the toy football, one of the students kicked it with his foot. The next moment, there was a loud explosion that blew up the students and prompted tribesmen to rush to the site of the blast.

AFP adds: Military spokesman Maj-Gen Shaukat Sultan said security forces were later involved in a shootout with militants during which one man was killed and another wounded and arrested. "Both the foreign terrorists were planting an explosive device on a road when security forces surrounded them... (and) opened fire," he said.

Combined with Cheney's speech that the "next attack will be worse, tens or hundreds of thousands of casualties" and Tommy Franks "next attack = martial law" and the draft bill in congress (mandatory service for all men and women 18-26) and the 40,000 troops already serving against their will and neo-con obvious dreams of global conquest...America ain't looking so good right now. What are we gonna do about it?

Can we afford to wait for the election this fall? What about William Safire's prediction of an October surprise attack? I think we'd better think pre-emptively and stop these guys before the next attack hits.

Spread the message far and wide - martial law is not acceptable....and Bush and company will be the major benefactors of another attack.
