The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

ATLANTA (CNN) -- As more than one billion Muslims prepare to celebrate Ramadan, terror experts are mixed about whether the holy month is a tool for recruiting terrorists.

Some terrorism experts and Islamic scholars say Ramadan gives extremists an opportunity to enlist new recruits.

"It's a time which can be exploited by radical clerics to motivate individuals into taking action on the basis they are somehow serving their religion," says terror expert M.J. Gohel.

And analysts see another temptation for terrorists: exploiting the Battle of Badr, a symbolic date in Muslim history, which falls near the U.S. presidential election.

Just wonder if anyone else feels this way: Doesn't it seem a bit curious that Arafat, though he's never been the picture of good health, suddenly is on his deathbed just days before the U.S. election? I wonder if he's been poisoned ... and prepared for martyrdom.

Al-qaeda don't view him as a comrade though. They think he's a sellout and hasn't done enough for the Palestinian people. Can you imagine, as bad as Arafat is, if some real radical extremist was installed in Palestine?

Following is the 'meat' from a 17-page release warning purportedly released by AQ earlier this summer. As you can see, some very specific threats, some consistent language with today's vtape. Time frame for action has obviously been adjusted forward from this release.

Thought you might find it of some interest. The 'streets filled with blood' stuff is more consistent with chem/bio threat form, whereas currently anticipated threat forms seem to tend toward the nuclear spectrum.

I think the most likely form would be Tim-McVeigh style terrorist attacks on buildings, infrastructure, and what-not, coupled with localized hit and run attacks.

All I remember was that it was supposed to be a major political assassination, either foreign or American. Names like Pervez Musharraf, Tony Blair and George Bush were speculated upon.

Hmmmmmm this becomes more interesting. One of two things could possibly account for this:

1. The video is a hoax done outside of AQ channels. Moderate to low probability given revealed content.
2. The video is valid, but such tight OPSEC on the Jihadi chatter rooms has prevented those in the 'know' from releasing the info to the 'grapevine'. Moderate possibility
