I thought it might be interesting to compile a list to gather some things for myself in the future. I came across some interesting images on the few words I have tried so far. I will try to come up with some more and add it to the next thread.

PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE
Office of the Spokesman

This information is current as of today, Fri Oct 22 2004 01:25:25 GMT-0700.

LAOS

October 21, 2004

This Public Announcement is being issued to advise U.S. citizens of continuing security concerns in Laos, which may be heightened due to the ASEAN Summit Conference that will take place November 25-30, 2004, in Vientiane. This Public Announcement supercedes the July 9, 2004, public announcement for Laos and expires on November 30, 2004.

The U.S. Embassy in Vientiane has received information that during the ASEAN summit conference, persons associated with anti-Lao government groups may be planning to detonate several explosive devices in Vientiane as well as in the following provinces of Laos : Bolikhamxai, Khammouan, Savannakhet, Salavan and Champassak. No further information is available at this time regarding specific targets or methods. In addition, travel between locations may be difficult. There may also be difficulties obtaining visas on arrival at the Wattay Airport and at the Friendship Bridge border crossing from Thailand during this time frame.

Since 2000, there have been periodic attacks on markets, two bus stations, all forms of ground transportation, border checkpoints and other public places. Between February 2003 and June 2004, bombings occurred in Vientiane, Savannakhet and other cities and provinces throughout Laos (Xieng Khouang, Sayabury, Houaphan, Saysomboun). Between February and April 2004 armed attacks on buses and other vehicles on Route 13 (Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang) and Route 7 (junction Route 13 to Phonsavan) killed at least 12 persons. In addition, several incidents of small-scale clashes between suspected anti-government insurgents and Lao security forces occurred in the Route 13 corridor area in late 2003 and early 2004.

In light of these incidents and threat information, the Department of State recommends that U.S. citizens traveling or residing in Laos exercise extreme caution in public places and be alert to their surroundings, since the locations of future incidents is unpredictable. In particular, U.S. citizens should continue to avoid traveling by road between Vang Vieng and Luang Phrabang and on Route 7 from the Route 13 junction to Phonsavan town and in surrounding areas.

After some attacks, the Lao government has been known to shut down telecommunications and stop all transport on main roads for up to several days. Travelers should comply with requests to stop at checkpoints and roadblocks. U.S. citizens, especially those considering travel outside urban centers, are advised to contact relevant Lao government offices, such as Lao Immigration Police Headquarters in Vientiane, local police and customs offices, or the U.S. Embassy for the most current security information. To avoid trouble with the authorities, U.S. citizens traveling outside of normal tourist areas or contemplating any unusual activity (including, but not limited to, engaging in business, extensive photography, or scientific research of any kind) should consider seeking advance permission from the Village Chief, District Head, Provincial Governor, or National Tourism Authority, as appropriate.

U.S. citizens are strongly encouraged to consult the Department of State's Consular Information Sheet for Laos, and the Worldwide Caution Public Announcement, located at http://travel.state.gov. For further information, U.S. citizens may also contact the Department of State toll-free at 1-888-407-4747, or, if calling from overseas, 317-472-2328. The U.S. Embassy is located at Thanon Bartholonie (near Tat Dam), in Vientiane; from the U.S., mail may be addressed to U.S. Embassy Vientiane, Box V, APO AP 96546; Telephone (856-21) 212-581, 212-582, 212-585; duty officer emergency cellular telephone (856-20) 5502-016; consular section fax number (856-21) 251-624; embassy-wide fax number (856-21) 212-584; internet: http://usembassy.state.gov/laos, e-mail: consularvienti@state.gov.

MONASTERY IN MACEDONIA DEMOLISHED; ANOTHER CHURCH DEMOLITION PLANNED
Metropolitan To Be Jailed?

By Michael Ireland
Chief Correspondent, ASSIST News Service

MACEDONIA  (ANS) -- A Macedonian government official has refused to confirm or deny media reports that the government intends to demolish the Serbian Orthodox Church in the village of Luzani, and that a religious leader is threatened with imprisonment.

The reports follow the surprise nighttime destruction of the St John Chrysostom Monastery in Nizepole, southern Macedonia -- which contained Metropolitan Jovan (Vranisskovski) and about 10 monks and nuns -- by approximately 500 police armed with automatic weapons, and demolition workers with bulldozers.

According to a report by Drasko Djenovic, writing for the Fourm18 news service, the monastery was the cathedral of the Archbishopric of Ohrid, and was earlier this year attacked by a paramilitary 'state security' unit armed with machine guns. Officials in Bitola have refused to discuss the monastery demolition with Forum 18.

Metropolitan Jovan is separately being threatened with an 18 month jail sentence, and told Forum 18 that he expects his appeal against the sentence will be turned down.

Dr Cane Mojanovski, president of the Macedonian government's committee for relations with religious communities, refused to confirm or deny to Forum
18 News Service on October 20 reports from Metropolitan Jovan (Vranisskovski) and the media in Belgrade that the Macedonian government intends to demolish a Serbian Orthodox church in Luzani village, near Prilep in south central Macedonia, referring all enquiries to the building inspectorate.

Metropolitan Jovan told Forum 18 that the church is threatened with destruction even though a building permit was issued for it in September. Metropolitan Jovan heads the Macedonian archbishopric of the Serbian Orthodox Church, which is not recognized by the Macedonian government (see F18News 23 September 2004 http://www.forum18.org/Archive.php?article_id=418).

The intended church demolition comes after the sudden and unexpected demolition, just before midnight on the night of October 15-16, of the Serbian Orthodox monastery of St John Chrysostom in the village of Nizepole, near Bitola in southern Macedonia.

About 500 police from the capital Skopje, armed with automatic weapons, surrounded the monastery while Metropolitan Jovan was inside with about 10 monks and nuns. At the same time, police blocked the Ohrid - Bitola - Nizepole road.

Workers then used bulldozers to demolish the monastery, as well as walls stabilizing the steep terrain on which the monastery was built. The monastery was the cathedral of the Serbian Orthodox Archbishopric of Ohrid, in Macedonia.

The authorities have claimed that the reason for the monastery's demolition is that it did not have a building permit. Forum 18 made eight calls on October 21 to various officials of the Bitola administration, but no one was prepared to discuss the reasons for monastery's demolition. Once Forum 18 had explained why it was calling, officials immediately referred the questions to other offices.

Dr Mojanovski told Forum 18 that he cannot comment on the acts of other state institutions, and that the demolition of church buildings is under the authority of the building inspectorate.

The monastery was built in a village, and in its vicinity are more than 50 solidly constructed buildings none of which has a building permit, as is normal in Macedonia for villages of this type.

The land on which the monastery stood belongs to Metropolitan Jovan's parents, Galina and Argira Vranisskovski, and their house -- which was recently robbed and damaged by fire -- is about 100 metres (100 yards) from the site of the monastery.

Even though in planning terms their house, like the other village houses, has the same legal status as the monastery, the building inspectorate has shown no interest in any of the village's houses.

Metropolitan Jovan told Forum 18 on October 20 that he had gone to Bitola's building inspectorate after the monastery's destruction to ask for the formal legal decree ordering the destruction, but officials told him that
there was no decree.

They said they had received an order from Skopje and then placed an "information paper" announcing the intended demolition of the monastery on the town hall notice board. When Metropolitan Jovan asked to see a copy of this "information paper", the officials told him that they no longer had it.

The demolition is the latest in a long series of attacks by Macedonian authorities on the Serbian Orthodox Church in Macedonia.

Among numerous other incidents, Metropolitan Jovan has been jailed, as well as another bishop and a monk fined (see F18News 28 January 2004 http://www.forum18.org/Archive.php?article_id=238),  and the now-demolished monastery was attacked last February with machine guns by a paramilitary "state security unit" (see F18News 24 February 2004 http://www.forum18.org/Archive.php?article_id=259).

A day before the destruction of the monastery, October 15, Metropolitan Jovan received the results of an appeal against a mid-August court decision that he be sentenced to 18 months' imprisonment for "spreading religious, national and racist intolerance", charges he rejects (see F18News 23 September 2004
http://www.forum18.org/Archive.php?article_id=418).  He told Forum 18 that he has 15 days to make another appeal, but that he expects that this will be turned down and that he will be sent to jail again.

The Macedonian state has prevented any rival Orthodox jurisdiction to the Macedonian Orthodox Church from existing in the country (see F18News 23 September 2004 http://www.forum18.org/Archive.php?article_id=418).

On October 18 the MIA state news agency reported that "representatives of the Macedonian Orthodox Church clergy and monastic order fully support the Synod of the Macedonian Orthodox Church in its efforts to preserve the church, its name, autocephaly status and dignity."

The Macedonian Orthodox Church claimed autocephaly (complete independence) from the Serbian Orthodox Church in 1967, but no other canonical Orthodox Church in the world recognizes this.

Note that the formally recognized name of Macedonia in international law is "The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia."

"Study of plane wreckage
finds no structural defect"

"The Cessna 310 that crashed
Sunday likely exploded on impact"
By Gary Kubota
gkubota@starbulletin.com

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "WAILUKU » National Transportation Safety Board investigator Tealeye Cornejo said no defects were found in the engine and structure of the Cessna 310 that crashed Sunday, killing a pilot on Maui.

Cornejo said yesterday that the airplane appeared to have exploded upon impact at the 3,700-foot level of western Haleakala.

The pilot, Ward M. Mareels, 54, of Kailua, Oahu, died in the crash shortly after departing Kahului Airport at 9:18 p.m. Sunday.

"He hit pretty level with the terrain, and there was a fire mark from the first identified point of impact to the final resting spot," she said.

Cornejo, who finished her examination of the crash site and wreckage yesterday, said Mareels was flying his twin-engine airplane from Kahului Airport to Kailua-Kona on the Big Island to meet friends who were participating in the Ironman Triathlon.

Residents in the Kula area said they saw an airplane flying low and level toward the slope and wondered why it was heading toward the mountain rather than flying around it.

Residents described the night weather as clear, but there was no moon, Cornejo said.

Mareels, a flight instructor, was flying his airplane by visual flight rules and not using navigational instruments during his trip, she said."

"C. difficile deaths an 'epidemic,' says Quebec doctor"

Brian Daly
Canadian Press

Thursday, October 21, 2004

ARTICLE SNIPPT: "MONTREAL (CP) - An infection-control specialist described a C. difficile outbreak in Quebec Wednesday as an 'epidemic' that has killed 109 people in 10 hospitals over a six-month period this year.

Dr. Vivian Loo, author of a study conducted from January to June, said her findings indicate the virulent strain was also indirectly responsible for 108 deaths in the 10 hospitals in Montreal and Sherbrooke, Que. Another 33 patients underwent major intestinal surgery to control their affliction, said the study.

Asked at a news conference if the aggressive hospital-based strain had reached epidemic proportions, she replied: "I would say this is an epidemic, yes.

"Both the incidence (of C. difficile) and the mortality have gone up."

C. difficile, which can cause severe diarrhea, has previously been blamed for nearly 100 deaths in Canada since 2001, with the vast majority of the cases in Quebec hospitals."

MAN'S BODY FOUND IN WHEEL WELL OF PLANE

10/22/2004, 6:30 a.m. ET
The Associated Press

ROMULUS, Mich. (AP) — A man's body was found early Friday in the wheel well of an American Airlines jet from Miami landing at Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

The body was found about 1 a.m. by an airport worker after passengers had disembarked. The man's identity and cause of death were not immediately known.

A message left for an airport spokesman was not immediately returned Friday.

People have attempted to stow away on flights in the wheel wells of airliners, a practice made particularly dangerous by severe temperature and pressure conditions.

I swear, I am SO sick of un named MSM sources ... there's something REAL wrong with raising - or discrediting - an alert based on somebody who's too chicken to state their NAME

I've had quiet gratitude mingled with astonishment that there have been no more Al Quada attacks in the US so far ... important dates have come and gone.

What I'm thinking is that their best and brightest are being kept busy in Iraq, or are bottled up in caves by the US-Pakistani forces.

But ... I don't think we need to feel too relieved. I still think they'll hit US if and when they can.
