The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Ramadan terror concerns?
Full Story

ATLANTA (CNN) -- As more than one billion Muslims prepare to celebrate Ramadan, terror experts are mixed about whether the holy month is a tool for recruiting terrorists.

Some terrorism experts and Islamic scholars say Ramadan gives extremists an opportunity to enlist new recruits.

"It's a time which can be exploited by radical clerics to motivate individuals into taking action on the basis they are somehow serving their religion," says terror expert M.J. Gohel.

And analysts see another temptation for terrorists: exploiting the Battle of Badr, a symbolic date in Muslim history, which falls near the U.S. presidential election.

"I will never cower before any master nor bend to any threat."

It has been quiet since thread 19 though hasn't it? I remember when it wasn't unusual for this thread to have four hundred posts per day.

I'm really surprised how quiet things are in general on the terrorism front on the web. I was expecting a flurry of activity and at least an orange alert leading up to the elections. Then again, maybe we are in the eye of the storm?

The daily post count has picked back up with this thread, 19 was a bit slow. I suspect things will remain active as we head into the winter months, this time of year has a lot of important dates, etc.

I think that the inability of AQ/Talaban to disrupt or even mount a single attack on the Afganistan election day tells us volumes as to why it appears that things are slow. I suspect that the number of arrests of key AQ, plus Pakistani operations in the remote areas with Afganistan, plus targeted Israeli hits on terror leaders, plus agressive law enforcement in many countries world wide and plus the terrorist magnet/death bed called Fallujah are all combining to set the scum on their heels. I think that the behind the scenes war is taking its toll, thus forcing them to lay lower than normal. Thus the apparent calm.

UK: Army infiltrated by Al-Qaeda

A startling revelation from the Times Online, with thanks to Lester:

THE Territorial Army has been infiltrated by Al-Qaeda suspects, giving the Islamic terrorist group potential access to military bases, explosives and fuel dumps.

Five Al-Qaeda suspects are believed to have trained as part-time soldiers with the TA. At least one is now in custody.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed that other terror suspects have attempted to join the TA, but says they were rejected after undergoing security checks.

The connection with Britain’s Al-Qaeda network was uncovered in a series of wide-ranging investigations by MI5 and Scotland Yard’s Special Branch.

It is believed the terrorist suspects may have been taking advantage of military training as well as gaining access to bases and weapons.

Patrick Mercer, the Tory homeland security spokesman and a former army officer, said Al-Qaeda terrorists could use TA passes to penetrate security at key MoD establishments such as the permanent joint headquarters at Northwood in Greater London.

“This could have very serious security implications. Clearly in the war against terror you need to know who your friends are. The last thing we want is the enemy masquerading as our own people,” Mercer said.

The TA has about 41,000 members and comprises a substantial portion of the 102,000-strong British Army and has 329 centres throughout the country.

This is a good point. I've actually been surprised at how things have been going in recent weeks in regards to 'chatter,'or lack thereof. Then I remember all the stuff we know about al Qaida and wonder if something sinister is just over the horizon. You are probably right, they are likely laying low in many regions right now.

You are probably right, they are likely laying low in many regions right now.

Or laying in prisons or graves. As I mentioned a while back, I think the bench may be working most things now and could well be getting desparate. This breeds carelessness which results in actions that disclose their identities and motives, hence the arrests of key players such as Khan.
