Does a Bush-Cheney Pre-Election Surge Trigger A Major Terrorist Attack ?

President Bush has added to his growing election lead since last Friday's debate. and will presumably increase that lead after the third presidential debate.

Consider these scenarios.

If Kerry-Edwards manage to pass Bush-Cheney in the polls, then the Islamo-Fascist Terrorists need only to quietly sit by and watch Kerry win election.

On the other hand, if Bush-Cheney maintains or increases their electorial lead, it's to the Islamo-Fascist Terrorist's advantage to hit America with a savage repeat of Sept 9-11, in an attempt to convince the critical "Undecided Voters" that Bush-Cheney have failed to protect America.

Wretchard (Belmont Club) is specifically requested to weigh-in on this question.

I think regardless of the Poll #'s an attack may occur with in the next few weeks to try to influnce the election. I don't think the poll #'s are the trigger. My fear is that it will be a 1-2 weeks prior to the election to either to try to influnce voters or to keep people away from the polls. it will be a tedious next few weeks.

The Democrat Senator representing Minnesota issued a statement today that he was closing his Washington, DC office until after the elections.

He said is reason was the safety and security of his staff.

Apparently, the Senate had a closed-door meeting at which Majority Leader Frist discussed classified Intel information. Following that meeting, the MN Senator decided to close his office.

Some of the afternoon talk programs accused the MN Senator of grandstanding.

Your scenario is silly. There is no way an attack will throw the election to Kerry. Americans are simply different animals from, say, the Europeans.

Any attack will throw it to Bush because Americans rally around the leadership during a crisis. They'll rally around Bush If for nothing else, then just to shoot the proverbial bird in the direction of the attackers.

No one knows how a terrorist attack would affect the election. It could cause a surge of patriotism and make people want to stay the course. The MSM would definitely be trying to spin it to help Kerry but who knows. Let's hope it doesn't happen. It would be chaos.

America should not be Spain, but there is the need for vigilance by all before an election since the terrorists would love to make an impact and probably Kerry would use it.

The Democrats and Kerry are extreme leftists that could ruin our country, in addition, they do believe their own press.

You can bet that if something does happen, slimeballs like Katie Couric and Red Dan Rather will blame the President every day until the election.

If they had a backpack nuke they would use it no matter who's in office.

I do believe from what I can see, we got em on the run thanks to the Bush team and our brave soldiers "over there" around the globe.

Americans would be insane to roll over for Kerry in any event. Any event. He's a wimp and will never defend our freedom like George W. Bush. If so-called undecideds don't get that by now, God help them.

We know that an attack won't throw the election to Kerry but after Spain do the terrorist know that? I think they will try to attack right before the elections hoping for the same result as in Spain.

One fault with your premise is that we have not seen a Bush "surge" over the past few days. It looks like he has stabilized, and that was crucial, but he has not surged again (not yet at least).

Yeh. If they try anything, it would be in a manner to embarrass and confront the current admin. The Beslan school could be a blueprint. A direct attack as 9-11-01 would not be beneficial in swaying the election to Kerry.

They weren't able to accomplish much to influence the recent Aussie election. Maybe that will hold true here, too.

Yeah I am sure that there will be those in the MSM that will crow that it is Bushs fault and that he did not make it safer, but those that do that if we are attack second time run the great risk of making themselves pariahs by appearing to applaud or support the attacks by blaming Bush (As if Rather has not already made himself a Pariah.)

Pariahs even object to having Red Dan lumped in with them.

Terrorists may gamble with an attack in order to give sKerry the chance to say "See, Bush and Cheney did not keep you safe like they said they would. I was right to say the attack on Iraq made us more vulnerable, less safe, and I was right."

You know sKerry would try to leverage an attack for his own political gain. Let's hope he doesn't have the chance.

I submit to you that AQ plans its ops way too far in advance to respond to something like this. We found out later that the Spanish attacks were planned long before there was any linkage to Iraq---it just worked out nicely for AQ, that's all. Most ops are 2-4 years in the planning.

(That should have been even more chilling to the Spaniards, because it means that their vote doesn't change a thing about how AQ views them!)

I think we've so effectively neutralized AQ that they are incapable of mounting an effective attack against the US right now. They can regroup and will perhaps be able to attack at some time in the future, but right now, I think it's beyond them.

I'm with you, I think that an attack on the U.S. would hand the presidency overwhelmingly to President Bush. I think the terrorists are content to try to undermine the war in Iraq and hope that it causes President Bush not to be re-elected.
