WILLIAM SAFIRE: BUSH DELIVERED BODY BLOW IN ROUND 2
Star Tribune ^ | 10/12/04 | William Safire

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- When pro-Kerry commentators solemnly pronounce Debate Round 2 to have been "a draw" -- you know George Bush won that round.

The president won because he went in with a theme spoken by the heavyweight champion Joe Louis, just before his 1946 victory over the lighter, faster Billy Conn: "He can run, but he can't hide." (The Brown Bomber caught up with Conn in the eighth round of that first TV spectacular.)

Bush's debate plan was to keep boring in on the Kerry record: flip-flopping this year on the war, but all too consistently liberal for 20 years on tax increases.

On the war, Kerry almost eagerly made Bush's point, at first saying, "I do believe Saddam Hussein was a threat," and moments later denouncing Bush for being "preoccupied with Iraq, where there wasn't a threat."

Now we move on to Wednesday nights's domestic issues debate, where the Flop-Flippin for Kerry is even more intense!!! There's a reason he never talks about his Senate record, and now America's going to find out WHAT IT IS!

FYI, we are popular with probably 50% of the Brit's just like we are popular with 50% of Americans (ie red states, ok maybe 20% of the Dims actually love their country so 70%).

I think he is right, though, not to push the percentage the Kerry's paid on their taxes. That could backfire. I suspect their income is largely dividend income and Kerry can come back and say that he, in fact, opposes the tax law changes that reduced the tax rate on dividends. He can then use his own personal situation as the perfect argument that Bush has helped the rich avoid taxes.

Our first President was not particularly popular in England. What a great line. The Prez needs to use this in the debate tomorrow night.

The folks may be interested to know that this unidentified precious baby is located in Iraq. And from the facial expression, he/she doesn't have any worries, at least when the photo was taken. It's in the collection published on October 9, 2004 at http://ChamorroBible.org/gpw/gpw-20041009.htm , along with three other downright adorable photos. One of the photos of was recently brought to the forum's attention under the title Heartwarming Photographs of the Day -- Including "Eager Son", http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1240426/posts , where a couple people rightfully described it as "sweet."

"This was ironic because she didn't even vote for our president. I did. The trouble is: our president has made the US really unpopular."

Your president made the US really unpopular with Islamists, many of whom atill think, because of him, that every American is a drunken coke fiend who'll hump anything or anyone that stays still long enough and gleefully murder our babies in order to use their budding body parts to fix our own failing ones.

I'd welcome you to FR but...

Ooh, she is adorable! What a little angel.

I had saved the picture of the little boy the other day because it was so sweet. The little girls running to daddy is really sweet also.

Thanks for the ping.

I love all the debates for a number of reasons.

Reason #12 -- The four contenders this time around are making Al Gore look like the politician who failed his acting lessons. For this, I applaud even John Edwards.

Re your photo post @ 28.

Just remember, Kerry said all these terrorists are just "a nuisance." So, I guess that makes 9-1-1 a nuisance. The cleaning up of the two downed buildings, just a nuisance for NY City. The burial of 3,000 bodies (that they were able to find), just a nuisance for the families. Just a nuisance for the NYPD and FDNY. Yup, just a simple, every day, little ole nuisance. We can live (can we?) with these little terrorist nuisances can't we? Can we (live)? Strike NYC, strike the Pentagon, down four air planes. Just every day nuisances.

You know I heard that some Arab/Muslim/Islamic group is trying to cry the same sob story. How President Bush went back on his pledge to be a uniter, not a divider. How he has made it worse for them, yada....yada......

I think they forgot that it WAS NOT the President of the United States who organized the terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and the PA plane (that crashed).

They might also consider that it is a good thing that the President did what he did. I am sure there were many (many, many) Amercians out there who were pretty pissed off and would have taken matters into their own hands had we not had a President who did it first!

I hope somehow the word makes it to this "group" so they can get an idea of really how lucky they are!
