Zogby Online Polling BIAS questioning (Vanity) Tin Man and Scarecrow question?
Zogby Online poll | 10/12/04 | Marc Zogby

Posted on 10/12/2004 5:52:35 AM PDT by IndianPrincessOK

If this is not an example of the bias in polling, I don't know what is. I received from Zogby the hyperlinks to polling for Presidential elections. There were very suggestive and manipulative and downright propaganda questioning such as listed below. Tin Man or Scarecrow, brains or lack of???? Of course there is a question in regard to stem cell research too...You think Zogby is trying to help Kerry??? Come on! I think we all need to share this information when the polling is so blatantly bias...can now understand WHY Zogby's polling is Kerry leaning....

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Who would you more likely vote for president - the Tin Man, who is all brains and no heart or the Scarecrow, who is all heart and no brain?

Tin man Scarecrow Neither/Not sure

If George Bush were an axe murderer, do you think he'd admit his mistakes?

If John Kerry were a member of the clergy, do you think he'd give good sermons?

Let's add the appropriate stress:

>> Do you think President Bush deserves to be re-elected, or do you think it is time for someone new?

Both italicized words show bias against Bush and for Kerry. This is not a fair poll.

---------------------------------------

Not only that, these question pitting a nonspecific opponent vs. a specific person are alway way skewed to the nonspecific candidate. Respondents can idealize the perfect candidate and agree that that idealized person would be better, though in reality they don't exist. JFK is the opponent in this case. It is pointless* to poll like this.

* = Unless, of course, your goal is to skew the poll to your biases.

This may be the best source of polling data:

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/Presidential_04/chart3way.html.

It shows Bush in an uptrend, Kerry stalled out at best.

Well, if there's any comfort - the tin man is the one who didn't have a heart.

Good point. The question is phrased to pit a possibly undeserving George Bush against ANY OTHER CANDIDATE.

Latest Zogby Question to Voters (phone interviews):

"Will you be voting for Bush, despite allegations that he and his staff eat babies in a secret Zionist ritual in the White House basement on Fridays,

or,

will you be voting for Senator Kerry, knowing that he plans to spend election night helping to change the dressings of leper patients at St. Hillary's Hospital for Children?"

Sorry, I see nothing wrong with the questions except the "tin-man or scarecrow," which was just silly unless there are respondents that actually think that way.

Zogby may be biased, but nothing reported here shows that with any force.

I have responded to Zogby polls, but I don't have much motivation. I think informed or staunch conservatives might just refuse to take his poll.

This is simply not a fair question. The two halves are neither equivalent nor lacking in rhetorical shading. The bias favorz Kerry. Therefore, the result cannot be trusted.

Why not just ask: Whom do you plan to vote for, Bush or Kerry?

I get these online Zogby polls all the time and also just took the one you are referring to. I to found some of these questions a bit esoteric and wasn't sure how to answer them.
