ABC News was under fire last night after an internal memo surfaced suggesting President Bush should be held more accountable for his statements than John Kerry.
The memo to staffers from the network's powerful political director, Marc Halperin, noted that while both campaigns are distorting the truth, Kerry's bending of the facts shouldn't be hit as hard.
"Kerry distorts, takes out of context, and mistakes all the time, but these are not central to his efforts to win," Halperin wrote.
But "the current Bush attacks on Kerry involve distortions and taking things out of context in a way that goes beyond what Kerry has done," Halperin added.
Halperin further advised the ABC staff to keep that in mind when reporting.
"We have a responsibility to hold both sides accountable to the public interest, but that doesn't mean we reflexively and artificially hold both sides 'equally' accountable when the facts don't warrant that," the memo continued.
"It's up to Kerry to defend himself, of course. But as one of the few news organizations with the skill and strength to help voters evaluate what the candidates are saying to serve the public interest, now is the time for all of us to step up and do that right."
A spokesman for ABC news insisted "we are not interested in taking sides, we are only interested in getting at the truth."
Halperin plays a mostly behind-the-scenes role at ABC, and is known as the father of "The Note," a daily political memo that is read by thousands of D.C. insiders, political players and journalists.

wow that is excellent....My hubby laughs at me sometimes, my emails are hideous HAHAHAHAHHA I RANT AT THEM like they MIGHT CARE what I have to say....I am never calm , nor do I sound like I have an education.....I REALLY need to work on this, but I get SO MAD....
Look, find the ratings and study them to your satisfaction if you don't believe me. Do a Google search and you can find them. Last time I looked at them, over the last 10 years ABC (GMA)/NBC (Today) were up by a significant margin, while CBS showed big decline.
I already told you that profitability for the Today Show et al are steady/up. Before you start making conclusions, look into the facts first.
No qualification is necessary. I appreciate your comment on its merit. This is indeed a holiday weekend and that will impact developing stories. What I found odd was the fact that the FOX newscaster stated that this was an upcoming story just after a break. I waited to hear what they had to say but no further comment was forthcoming.
NEWSFLASH: I have FOX on right now and Chris Wallace has now just stated that this story is coming up.
--I will get back to you.
I just want to be clear that I am not necessarily upset with FOXnews. There are several reasons the story may have been delayed. I've learned to just "never mind" with FNC when that happens. They cover "News Alert" items and often other "promised" items fall out. Sometimes they get covered, sometimes not... Seems for the most part, if it's really important, it does get covered. It just takes a while
Will have to see how any further coverage of this "jewel" progresses. It has the potential of being a real "hammer."
Any bets on whether or not this is BOR's (like him or hate him) "Talking Point" tomorrow?
HH, I was taking my meds and missed it.....what did they say about it? .. I got back only to see the dog segment there at the last......
"Why don't we call our local talk radio stations first thing Monday morning? That might keep this memo gate alive."
- I'm fairly certain that many of the talk radio shows will carry this item on Monday. It's too good for them to pass up without comment. We'll see.
MSM= Democrat Ministry of Propaganda
Now that certainly ought to win an award for tortured logic.
ping
CBS proved they are biased, ABC proved they are biased. The top news anchor for NBC supports Blather. I'm just waiting for Brokaw to get caught in bed with the Dims.
"Looks like ABC is headed right into the cavern of irrelevance right behind See-BS."
Are you really sure they haven't been in there decorating and getting it ready for BS?
Point given. But I don't think it will stop ABC from putting him back in the stable, sort of speaking.
well, even Drudge has taken the story down from his site...I guess ABC wins big time against us.....
Calico Cat says "It wasn't until NOW made excuses for Clinton"
Those reasons are good reasons - they show the agenda of and to what levels the Democratic Party will go and the MSM is right with them. Very dangerous for this country, no matter what side you are on.
Brit does not let a stupid or lying comment go unchallenged - well sometimes he lets them go or the whole program would be Brit correcting. And I say thank goodness. Someone has to point them out and say the truth. Just because Cici is Cici, doesn't mean she can say anything. Today her comments re Mark Halperin were outrageous and went unchallenged.
Charles Krauthammer is great!!!
