ABC News was under fire last night after an internal memo surfaced suggesting President Bush should be held more accountable for his statements than John Kerry.
The memo to staffers from the network's powerful political director, Marc Halperin, noted that while both campaigns are distorting the truth, Kerry's bending of the facts shouldn't be hit as hard.
"Kerry distorts, takes out of context, and mistakes all the time, but these are not central to his efforts to win," Halperin wrote.
But "the current Bush attacks on Kerry involve distortions and taking things out of context in a way that goes beyond what Kerry has done," Halperin added.
Halperin further advised the ABC staff to keep that in mind when reporting.
"We have a responsibility to hold both sides accountable to the public interest, but that doesn't mean we reflexively and artificially hold both sides 'equally' accountable when the facts don't warrant that," the memo continued.
"It's up to Kerry to defend himself, of course. But as one of the few news organizations with the skill and strength to help voters evaluate what the candidates are saying to serve the public interest, now is the time for all of us to step up and do that right."
A spokesman for ABC news insisted "we are not interested in taking sides, we are only interested in getting at the truth."
Halperin plays a mostly behind-the-scenes role at ABC, and is known as the father of "The Note," a daily political memo that is read by thousands of D.C. insiders, political players and journalists.

Looks like ABC is headed right into the cavern of irrelevance right behind See-BS.
btttttttttttttt
Let's hold hands and take down ABC this weekend..... bye-bye ABC
Lead the way!!
Kerry lies and has confessed to war crimes, but it's not central to his efforts to win. Sho nuff! Maybe shoplifting would help.
Now, Republicans have even their truthful statements twisted so much they sound like lies.
The effect of this is that it has become easy for liars to take over and control the Democratic Party. It is or has begun to destroy the party from the inside.
Made the NY Post.
...Or a DUI or DWI ticket?

I wrote emails yesterday, even called and talked to the President of ABC's secretary.
She knew why I was calling. Was polite, took my name and number.
Basically I told her I didn't need anybody to help me "evaluate" the news...I had ears and eyes. And that it was not in the "public interest" to do so, nor was it "the right thing" for a news organization to go beyond reporting the news and start trying to influence the electorate.
"It's up to Kerry to defend himself, of course. But as one of the few news organizations with the skill and strength to help voters evaluate what the candidates are saying to serve the public interest, now is the time for all of us to step up and do that right."
Well, excuuuuuuuse me, but, IMHO, this is the philosophy of genuine fascists. Halperin openly admits that Kerry distorts, takes things out of context, and makes mistakes all of the time. Then he says that while Kerry should defend himself, it's up to ABC to, in essence, explain to you stupid cows what he really said. BECAUSE IT'S IN THE PUBLIC INTEREST! Good heavens - to ABC the American people must be monumentally stupid!
We need to step it up.... Politcal Bias has no place in journalism we are not a Communist society... Communists had Pravda the Liberals have ABC and CBS... How many at CBS and ABC are on the George Soros take... Has he bought out the News networks... we need and indepth look...
If not bought out, bought off.
I left the Democratic party when I saw the media distort their reports of the Confirmation Hearings for Clarence Thomas. I watched the hearings carefully and realized MSM was lying to help the Democrats.
Maybe other honest Democrats will wake up today.
So when I turned on C-SPAN during the Dems' primary/caucus season and saw Kerry telling Iowa voters that Bush had just given an advocate of cross-burning a recess appointment to the federal bench, Kerry was just saying that for kicks - not in an effort to win???
Kerry intentionally distorted Judge Pickering's role in a case involving cross-burning. In other words, Kerry went out of his way to accuse both Bush and Pickering of being racists, even though there's absolutely no evidence to support that. To the suits at ABC, I guess that's no big deal.
In the Bizarro world of the Media Wing of the Democratic Party, that isn't necessarily a denial of their slant towards Kerry. Note the key passage in Halperin's email:
"It's up to Kerry to defend himself, of course. But as one of the few news organizations with the skill and strength to help voters evaluate what the candidates are saying to serve the public interest, now is the time for all of us to step up and do that right."
If you want to help the Democrat Party, and I mean if you REALLY want to help it, you must make it plain to its political candidates that they are on their own from now on. It's up to them, no you, to form viable political philosophies, and it's up to them, not you, to coherently explain it to the public. Make it plain that their play time is over, and has been over for some time now, and they must "put away the things of their youth," and finally accept adulthood, and think, speak, and behave accordingly.
Send a clear message Boycott Disney/ABC and any part of their evil conglomerate...
You left the Dems after Thomas' confirmation hearings?
It wasn't until NOW made excuses for Clinton that I seriously doubted the wisdom of my membership in the Dem Party...and revelations about the 'rentals' of Lincoln's Bedroom that pushed me away, forever. Looking at the hysterical pack of weirdos, thugs and prevaricators that the Democratic Party has become, I can say that my defection came not a moment too soon. And to think that I used to believe that those who complained about 'liberal media' were paranoid rednecks. I'm so glad I woke up!
