Oct 7 - A new report found that layoffs reached an eight-month high in September, while new hiring rose only slightly.
Employment consulting firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc. said companies announced 107,863 layoffs in September, 45 percent more than in August. The figure was the largest since January, when employers laid off 117,556 workers. Meanwhile, employers hired only 16,166 new workers, compared with 132,105 in August.
The computer, transportation, telecommunications and consumer products industries were particularly hard hit by the cuts.
"Historically, the period from September 1 through December 31 is when we see the heaviest downsizing and this year appears to be on track to repeat that trend," John Challenger, chief executive officer of the firm, told Reuters.
"This period can also be a time for hiring since companies are looking ahead to the new-year and making budget and staffing decisions," he said. "Weak hiring announcements last month are not a good indication of stronger job creation to come."
In truth, things here in the Bay Area are vastly improved Vs 1 year ago. People are job hopping again and our local unemployment figures have plumetted. We are now, for the first time in at least 2 years, down to the national average.
If you read the reference for this article you find that some economists think that 148,000 jobs will be announced tommorow. compared to 144,000 in August.
Is this a preview of the report that was supposed to come out tomorrow morning or something else?
You haven't been around much lately, Willie. Must have been a miserable summer and fall for you, huh? I'm still hanging on to your Bush/Cheney bumper sticker, though. Just send me your snail mail address, and it's on its way!

you don't understand - in willie green's world, that's a sign of credibility.
The only thing that could make her more credible in willie green's eyes is if she came out in favor of taxpayer funded mass transit in every city in the US.
I think the true employment number will be 5.4% unemployment or better (lower). Highest number of Americans employed, ever, in our history. Bush takes Kerry's Hoover comment and stuffed it up his nose.
Game, set and match.

Am I correct in stating that the link at the bottom of the article to a Reuters story supporting it has been yanked?
It is also proper decorum to slit one's wrists in the bathtub to help facilitate cleanup.
"remember kids, it's 'down the block', not 'across the street'!"
I'm really not sure. Look at the replies on down past my post on this thread. There's a few links you might be interested in.
Yep. So what?

I didn't detect any discrepancy or factual errors in her report as compared to the Reuters article (U.S. Job Cuts at 8-Month High in Sept.) that she used as a source.
So what's your point?
Willie is a DU embed here. Most of the others only post bad news from Iraq, but poor Willie's assignment is to try and trash an economy with a 5.4% unemployment rate. Poor sucker.
No, I simply didn't consider that to be a part of the article when I posted it. But now I've included the link in my reply #16.
5.4. If I'm not mistaken it was 5.6 when Clinton was reelected and the Dems crowed about how wonderful everything was in America. Never mind that China, North Korea, and Islamic nutjobs were plotting against America. As long as the economy was good, no one but us seemed to care. Anyone who brought up these danger spots in the world was labeled as a right wing nut and rabid Clinton hater.

Heh-heh. Kind of like trying to sell ice cream outside in the middle of a blizzard. Nobody's buying.
