WASHINGTON The House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly Tuesday against a bill to reinstate the military draft, a tool that had been used by Democrats to point out the inherent inequality of volunteer service.
The House voted 2-402 against suspending the debate and moving toward passage, meaning that the bill could be debated in perpetuity. The procedural motion is an action that prompts the sponsor of the legislation to pull it out of consideration.
Rep. Charles B. Rangel (search), D-N.Y., introduced the legislation in January 2003 in an effort to highlight what he saw as an ill-prepared and ill-advised Iraq policy. Sen. Ernest "Fritz" Hollings (search), D-S.C., pushed a similar bill in the Senate.
The legislation in both chambers declares that it is the obligation of every U.S. citizen and resident between the ages of 18 and 26 to perform a two-year period of national service.
GOP leaders said that Rangel and Hollings introduced

Who voted for this bill besides Rangel? Sheila Jackson-Lee?
Breaking News from yesterday.
Stark and Murtha voted for it.
This will make good ad material.
George Bush and Republicans in Congress defeat John Kerry's liberal allies in Congress attemps to bring back the draft.
Both those guys were in Korea, right?
Oooooh, so clever, that K-k-k-k-a-t-i-e-e. . .
Finally, an accurate title!
Details and evidence forthcoming on cBS and the DNC (they are being delayed by the new higher standards in their forging departments).
this plot at scaring the African-American people into voting against Bush using the DRAFT scare is so loathesome.
I'm new here - this is my first post after lurking and reading everything I've found. So, please excuse any posting mistakes.
My rhetorical question is: Why the heck isn't it all over the news that this bill was introduced by the DEMOCRATS?
Even Fox isn't giving it as much emphasis as I think it deserves.
Michelle
I thought the title of the article was pretty self explanitory!
Ooops!
I guess I should have gone to the website instead of relying on the heading that was posted with the article.
I wish people wouldn't change the article titles.
Because the media is bought and paid for by the DNC.
The MSM has not really made this point. I agree, the bloggger, e-mailers and talk radio need to point this point home to everyone. I e-mailed to everyone of my contacts, who sponsored this bill and the fact they didn't even vote for it. What hypocracy. Get the word out. Who needs the mainstream press. Useless bunch hacks.
"Rep. Charles B. Rangel (search), D-N.Y., introduced the legislation in January 2003 in an effort to highlight what he saw as an ill-prepared and ill-advised Iraq policy"
EERRRRRRRRRR.
Wrong answer.
Rangel ginned this up to embarrass the Republicans and divide the nation by class. I saw his Fox interview at the time he started this. His angle was that Bush started this war because the "poor" (read, black) youth of America were expendable to fight while the rich white kids didn't have to go.
Notwithstanding the fact that we have an all-volunteer military. Many of whom have now enlisted in a post-911 society and are full aware of their possible combat duties.
I didn't change it, I FReeped it.
"Notwithstanding the fact that we have an all-volunteer military. Many of whom have now enlisted in a post-911 society and are full aware of their possible combat duties."
His claim that blacks were 'unfairly' represented in the military, as compared to the population was proven totally wrong!

Nice having the House back, huh?
