I was a Democrate up untill 9-11

Posted on 10/06/2004 7:45:08 AM PDT by cindy68507

Just wanted to introduce myself, I stumbled on this place quite by accident and am quite pleased that I did. I was a Democrat all my life, and voted as such since the time I was 18. I wasnt really into politics, I just voted Democrat all the way down the line because my mom always said "The Democrats are for the poor people, and the Republicans are for the rich, and thats what my mother told me" I voted for Clinton TWICE!! (This is where I am hanging my head) 9-11 was a real wake up call for me. I started getting a real interest in what was going on around me. I stumbled on to Rush Limbaugh on day on my way home, I started questioning exactly what side I was on. I liked and agreed with what Rush had to say. I didnt know what the differances were really. I am so proud to say that I have figured out that I am a Conservative Republican. My mother and I still go round and round now that she see's I have gone over to the other side. I recently also discovered Sean Hannity, whom I just LOVE. I only watch Fox News now because it IS fair and balanced. What a wonderfull time to be alive, I never thought I would see such a political race that has gone the way it has. I am REALLY excited to finally see the "silent" majority waking up finally and speaking their minds and dusting off their boxing gloves. Any way, glad to meet you all and look forward to discussions!

Well! Is my face RED! I think I will never live down the Democrate oooopsy. But thats alright, thank you all for making me feel welcome. We need to stick together right now. Kind of a fierce war going on between the left and the right. Im happy to have a support group, and a place where I can get some more knowledge about whats going on.

Based strictly on my family's background and the mythos which the democrats have been selling for almost two hundred years (working class union member father, neither parent finished high school, etc.) I should have grown up a democrat. But somehow by the grace of G*d my great grandfather was a "hard shell" baptist abolitionist union army soldier from a border (read: slave) State and our family has been Republican now for at least four going on five generations.

Maybe at one time the democratic party could claim to represent "the working man" without it being entirely laughable, but no more. The "working classes", along with ethnic minorities and other splinter factions, are kept on as window dressing and muscle for a party whose real foundations are marxist university "elites" and government bureaucrats who survive by feeding from the public trough.

In any case, welcome to the light.

Cindy, do a keyword search for MarkSteyn (one word) and read away. If you were moved by what you heard from Rush and Sean, prepare to be completely blown away by Mr. Steyn's brilliance.

I was a democrat until 9/11 myself. hard-core, granola-eating liberal fool. I feel like a moron in that it took 9/11 to wake me up to the message that you can't sit around waiting for danger to come to us. It also allowed me to be more open to other conservative ideas, and thus find my way here. I'm still not a republican - I'll never lash myself down to any party again, but right now I have nothing but contempt for democrats. Your story has been repeted with 2 other friends of mine whom I don't normally have much contact with. Only a year or so after 9/11 did I get around to talking to them and learn that they had changed their whole perspective. This is why I think all these polls - both pro-bush or pro-kerry - are so much BS. They've never conducted a poll yet which samples "people who'se television was turned-on on 9/11". That poll will happen on election day.

If it makes you feel any better, we've ALL done dumb things in our younger days.

Me, I voted for John Anderson in 1980.

Welcome Cindy! Hope you enjoy these words from Lt. Gov. Michael Steele from Maryland, given at this years Republican Convention in New York!

"Now you may remember I mentioned Maebell Turner as one of the great inspirations in my life. Maebell is just one of many faces in America who struggled to raise a family and believed that she could offer something more for her children.

She grew up the daughter of sharecroppers and had to quit school in the fifth grade to work a farm. She married a man who died from alcoholism.

She worked forty-five years in a Laundromat, making minimum wage and still managed to send her kids to parochial school.

She never took public assistance, because as she put it, she didn't want the government raising her kids.

Maebell always saw the hope that her kids would be better off than she was, and she channeled her hope for that legacy into action.

Today, Maebell Turner has a daughter who is an accomplished pediatrician and a son who is Lieutenant Governor of Maryland.

A lifelong Democrat, she once asked me how I could become such a strong Republican; I simply replied "Mom, you raised me well."

You see, she raised me to understand and appreciate the words of Abraham Lincoln, who said: "You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot help the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by encouraging class hatred. You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. You cannot build character and courage by taking away man's initiative and incentive. You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they should do for themselves."

These are the beliefs of our Republican Party. These are the principles that drew me to this Party 28 years ago.

And today, the standard-bearer of these convictions is George W. Bush."

Welcome to FreeRepublc from another former dem -- lots of us here. Again, welcome.

Here's a story you might enjoy:

My nephew switched when he was 17. His parents went through the ceiling. The whole time he was growing up they gave him unisex toys for Christmas - feminist awareness and all that crap. And lots of liberal indoctrination. Now, he's 19, in college, and Republican. Making great grades, solid values, and backing Bush. Youthful rebellions working for us? Who woulda thunk it?

One of my favorite points:

Why do we look to the people who have the problems for the solutions?

Unfortunately, the Democrats sent their best into politics. The Republicans send those who have the time.

H...help a newbie.

Don't fret too much. Everyone is born a Democrat.

You don't become a Republican until you have first become an adult. Welcome to the real world.

Don't worry about the typo.
I do it all the time, and Mo, well.. she tends to infect others with contagious typo-itus.
(She's getting better though)

Here we also have a way of turning typos into forum legend.

Like this thread:

(Massive typos due to sleep deprivation.)

It has become legend.
So, it just may be possible that your typo will become cherished and kept in FR lore.

My conversion happened 12 years ago. Now comes the hard part, prepare to be branded and ostracized by all of your friends, some family, coworkers, etc...unless of course you keep your mouth shut and NEVER talk politics. If I had it to do over again I think I would keep my mouth shut. Good luck!
