I dunno about you folks, but I would prefer if we would leave the tribalism behind--or at least all be the American tribe.

The phrase "E Pluribus Unum" is long forgotten now.

The Italians can have it, and the whole state of Taxachusetts along with it.

But the divisions have long since evaporated, said DeNucci, 65, the state's auditor since 1987, who grew up in an Italian enclave in Newton.

The divisions evaporated because after World War II the Italians and the Irish intermarried like crazy.

I believe Italian Americans have outnumbered Irish Americans in Massachusetts for some time now.

For those interested in such things, Italian Americans are the largest group by ancestry in Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey (duh) and New York. I believe gli Paisani are also the number one ethnic group in Delaware as well, and second only to the Germans in Pennsylvania.

Keep in mind, however, that such figures include person such as myself that are of mixed ancestry. I may not have a vowel at the end of my name (my mom does), but I am counted as "Italian American" in census surveys.

Of course, upward mobility and intermarriage mean that such distinctions as Italian-American and Polish-American (my two tribes) are of less importance, particularly outside the northeast and certain parts of the midwest. Being third generation, I have greater "cultural" loyalty to the region of I was raised in than to any ethnicity.

The Irish only got into politics so we could get a job.
Since the "bluebloods" wouldn't hire us...
Remember the N.I.N.A.(NO IRISH NEED APPLY) signs.
Well the Irish have since prospered, educated their children and grandchildren and moved on...
You can have Taxachusetts!

Unfortunately, many politicians of either ethnic group do not take their Catholic faith seriously and use the government to promote abortion and homosexual activity (through civil same sex marriage).

It took the Italians about a century to overtake the Irish. But it's a bitter victory, since the Italians themselves have largely assimilated long years ago. And there have been plenty of Irish, Polish, and Jewish immigrants in recent years -- along with West Indians, Latin Americans, Chinese, and Southeast Asians. But Italians tend not to immigrate lately, and the old neighborhood may have a very elderly and old-fashioned feel to it by now.

IIRC, both Ireland and Italy have become net recipients of immigrants rather than sources of emigration in the last ten or twenty years, but the Irish are still coming here. This is the Italian moment, but if it matters at all, the Irish, with their specialized political skills, are apt to win this tribal derby in the end.

In the "old days" an Irish-Italian wedding was regarded as a "mixed marriage." But that's long a thing of the past. The old, ethnic-dominated Catholic parishes are closing down as well, and that's a sad thing for those who remember how things were.

Is this related to that other thread going on right now about America's "Scotch-Italian" roots?

:-)
