Recently, Football Fans for Truth learned that John Kerry claimed a significant achievement: qualifying and running the Boston Marathon.
In an ESPN interview, he said, "I ran a marathon back in '80, something like that. Did the Boston Marathon."
An ESPN analysis of his athletic achievements mentions that "[he] ran the Boston Marathon in the 1970s".
In its November 2004 issue, Runner's World observes that John Kerry "[ran] the Boston Marathon in the '70s".
In April 2002, John Kerry was the starter for the Boston Marathon. The Daily Free Press reports that Senator Kerry "lamented the fact that time constraints had made it impossible for him to run in the Marathon, which he participated in 20 years ago."
In a conversation with a Iowa state senator, John Kerry said, "I remember my first Boston Marathon ... it's a great run."
In a later article, ESPN tried to nail down the exact date and reported that "there's no official record of his feat, and his campaign did not provide further details despite repeated inquiries." The November issue of Runner's World reports that "he doesn't recall his time, and no official record exists".
While we hold that John Kerry is not fit to be sports-fan-in-chief, Football Fans for Truth will alert their many readers to John Kerry's Boston Marathon run as evidence of our dedication to honesty and openness. But we're not sure exactly when this event occurred. Did he run it twice, once in the 70s and once in 1980, or once in 1980 and once in 1982? When did he qualify for the marathon?
We aren't too surprised that John Kerry doesn't remember his time. After all, he can't remember the name of an historic football stadium or current baseball players, so how can we expect him to remember an event that happened 20....no, 22...no, 24 or 25, maybe?...years ago?

Hey did you know he served in Vietnam and was under enemy fire on several occasions?. How dare you question his athletic running record. I mean a hero and such is beyond reproach. (sarcasm off).
Yeah, and you have a photograph of yourself at the finish line with the time. No one runs the Boston Marathon without a photograph of themselves performing the feat, much less a politician from MA who re-enacted in 8 mm his Vietnam derring do.
The Marathoner in Chief
Though injuries have reduced his running during his presidency, Bush has a treadmill on Air Force One and goes for hour-long jaunts on it in the air during overseas trips. In January, 1993, he finished the Houston Marathon in 3:44:52 (that's about an 8:30 pace); he's the only president ever to complete that distance. (Kerry claims to have run in, and finished, the Boston Marathon "in '80, something like that" -- but there's no official record of his feat, and his campaign did not provide further details despite repeated inquiries.)
New Balance 1023s (too expensive but a good ride). I've been running for only a year and despite all my pronouncements before I took it up, I've become hooked on all the details. Bottom line with a personality like Kerry's, we--unfortunately--would have heard about it ad nauseam. By the way, Edwards is on the cover of Runner's World. The cover and article were quickly torn out and tossed in the garbage.
The qualifying standards go by 5 year age groups, male and female, and have been changed a bit over the years.
You know who was in front and behind you when you hit the wall, you know how many people watched you after you looked around for a quiet place to puke. You know how much you appreciated your wife (in my case) or whoever it was that was your non-running partner for the event. Most of us just don't climb in our cars and drive away.
Of course I'm sure Kerry immediately climbed aboard his plane for a quick trip to Australia to perform in the America's Cup.
At Yale, Kerry became a stunt flyer, a pursuit he continued until recently. He learned aeronautics in the Navy, and is licensed to fly commercial aircraft, gliders and seaplanes. The last might have come in handy when he tried to fly under the Golden Gate Bridge.
He turned away from that challenge, he told the Washington Post in 1985.
"I could have continued under, I guess, but I opted out," he said. There've been other thrilling pursuits -- the Democratic candidate is a snowboarder, a windsurfer, and a kite-sailor. There are endurance sports: He ran the Boston Marathon in the 1970s; and last August, he finished the 110-mile Pan-Massachusetts Challenge, a bicycle race, in 6 1/2 hours. That put him in 32nd place in the field of 3,700 riders.

First, you remember what year it was, then what time you did each one in, then you have a medal that you get for finishing.That medal is not in a drawer, or hidden away.
I've ran 6 marathons 9 San Diego 85, Marine Corps 92, Big Sur 93, 94, 95, 97, and getting ready for Marine Corps
(Oct 31). I can recall the times in each one(over 4 hours)
He is quoted, "I remember my FIRST Boston Marathon." Obviously implying he ran more than one.

Participated, how? Was he a volunteer handing out water?
You will note that the other candidates, Bush and Edwards, show which marathon they have run and the exact times for each. As an aside, although I can't stand Edwards, his marathon times are pretty impressive.
Also, the qualifying times back in the seventies were under 3 hours. There is no way that a sub-3 hour marathoner would not remember running Boston for the first time. What a maroon!!

Of course, you are correct. I strongly suspect that Kerry probably ran two miles of it once as part of some sort of ceremonial/political thing.
Kerry, of course, talks about it as if he finished.
It is a lie as he presents it...but one he could retreat from, claiming that people just misunderstood.
Just from his past history of padding his record and casual dishonesty, I would not be surprised if he somehow cheated in this bicycle race.....was he seen at all the checkpoints?
California International Marathon, December 2, 2001. Finished in the top 3,000 (LOL!!!). Hey, I was 54 years old and still running at the end. Believe me, not only do I remember the day, the year, and the location, I remember every step those last 3 or 4 miles!
