Did President Bush ‘Sandbag’ Kerry At The Debate?
OpinionEditorials ^ | October 04, 2004 | Lee P Butler

In Nascar, the term ‘sandbag’ is used to describe a maneuver in which a driver who has a really fast car doesn’t utilize the full potential of the car’s strength during that race. The idea is to intentionally make the other drivers; who aren’t expecting this to happen, think they may have the fastest cars so they make fewer adjustments to their cars...to make them even faster...and they show everyone else what they have during the race.

Exactly! A candidate can "win" the debate and then have that very same debate come back and bite him in the a$$. (Or as they say in France --derrier).

Bush has made a career of being mis-under-estimated

Try Mississippi....inexpensive labor, good infrastructure, low cost real estate, etc...have a great new pro-business Republican Governor, Haley Barbour (former RNC Chairman).

Your reply is right on the money.

W had spent too much time consoling hurricane victums, and handing out bags of ice while kerry was in the spa relaxing and getting manicures.

During the debate, I think W was astounded at hearing the unadulterated lies coming from the pacifist/traitor.

I think that W now has an attitude that will nail the bstrd friday.

Hope so.

SAND BAGGING is the wrong term, ( from the theater when one of the sandbags that counter balanced the back drops would suddenly fall out of no where and " sand bag" an actor on stage.

Rope a dope is the propper term. Where Muhamed Ali faked being tired through most of his fight with ( Frazier??? ) and then pounded him into oblivion.

This is what I have been saying for a week. Bush did it to gore and destroyed him the second round. That is what will happen next.

Great Picture!

Cheney looks like he's on the verge of making a smart-ass comment that'd crack the room up.

One question though.

Who's the guy in the purple tie in the lower right-hand corner of the pic?

Is it Mel Martinez? I can't tell.

" While elite media pundits were amazed by how 'presidential' Kerry appeared "

Their idea of presidential must be an alleged male who wears lipstick ,
gets Botox,
dons a speedo in a tanning booth for that lovely orange glow,
gets thousand dollar haircuts and has $ 15,000 dollars worth of cosmetic dentistry done on his mouth ( during the Reagan funeral campaign hiatus ) for a model smile.
Only he got a female model smile.

"Crankey and tired are ok. Bush has a job, and kerry just tosses a football occasionally on the tarmacks of the world."

LOL He does seem to think that the "average guy" voter spends a lot of recreational time either in the ocean or at airports.

About I worked through the grieving phase of the 1st debate, I finally started to wonder if Rove whispered into Dubya's ear before he took the podium "Give him enough rope."

It worked for Ali vs. Forman. The now famous Rope-A-Dope. Angelo Dundee was a genious. So is Rove.

.
I was thinking about this just this afternoon. Kerry came on the offensive but he made more than a dozen major errors and/or statements that are rather frightening.

I think Bush just let Kerry be a motor mouth and step in it, while Bush intentionally held back. Perhaps to avoid making mistakes and sound bites, and perhaps to embolden Kerry. The media may spin the dumb Bush, but he Kerry cut his own throat.

Lots of facts and quotes about the president-wannabe at the John F. Kerry Timeline.

I don't think "W" would have called it "sandbagging" he would likely say something "cowboyish" like "givin' him enough rope to hang hisself on" or "I just thought if he didn't see the burr under the saddle I'd teach him, by not saying anything"

"W" is smarter than he gets credit for, and Kerry not only let out enough rope, he put the 13 knots in it himself.

Bush was not sandbagging but the effect may be just as good. All he needs to do is improve. It's like Reagan in '84. People thought he'd gone senile after his first debate.

In his second debate, he lost again, but he sounded just fine doing it, he made great jokes and was personable and clearly not senile.

All Bush has to do is improve. He frankly doesn't have to win.

Think about this too, whatever Bush does in the debates afterwards will be compared to the first. Meaning he wins! This was supposed to be Kerrys best performance of his sorry politcal career. So how does he top it.
