Did President Bush ‘Sandbag’ Kerry At The Debate?
OpinionEditorials ^ | October 04, 2004 | Lee P Butler

In Nascar, the term ‘sandbag’ is used to describe a maneuver in which a driver who has a really fast car doesn’t utilize the full potential of the car’s strength during that race. The idea is to intentionally make the other drivers; who aren’t expecting this to happen, think they may have the fastest cars so they make fewer adjustments to their cars...to make them even faster...and they show everyone else what they have during the race.

Bush wasn't sandbagging, just over-coached.

He had been getting hammered for saying that we were winning the WOT and things were improving in IRAQ, while the MSM has been portraying it as a quagmire. So, while Bush was correct, he was getting hammered again by the MSM who were portraing him as being in a fantasy world of spin (they are the DNC's best 527 after all). I think that his coaches kept stressing for him to admit that it was hard work but that we were making progress. So, he repeated it 50 times during the debate.

It was a no win situation. If he had told the truth, the MSM would have said that he was in denial about the facts on the ground. What he should have said is that it is hard work, but America has never backed down from hard work for the right causes.

Crankey and tired are ok. Bush has a job, and kerry just tosses a football occasionally on the tarmacks of the world.

President Bush may have been a little tired. He had been out meeting with hurricane victims that day, while Kerry was taking a spa treatment.

I'm tired too. I'm tired of the media playing into Kerry's hands. He is a snakeoil salesman, anyone who knows the record of the two candidates would know that when it comes to heart, character, and strength....President Bush won the debate hands down.

We can only hope and pray that good, hardworking Americans will see the difference between the two.

I hope you're right. The prospect of a Kerry presidency is downright scary. I hope Bush brings up the abysmal record of the senator. We're 29 days from the election and no one knows what Kerry truly stands for. The president can't wait for the media to bring light to this. It's up to him to hit hard in the last two debates, and go nonstop till the election. He needs to repeat over and over that Kerry is a big time Massachusetts liberal, and the protege of one Ted Kennedy.

I don't think he was sandbagging. He spent the day of the debate with people who lost everything they owned in the hurricane. He was probably in a downer mood plus he isn't the best debater.

Good thing we are looking for a good leader, and not just a good debater.

"Yes but if you read into to article Bush got some great soundbites to use ..."Can you say GLOBAL TEST?"

I didn't mean that President Bush wouldn't use all the opportunities given to him... just that he wouldn't try to fool anyone into thinking he was something he was not.

:)

I don't know about sand bagging, but I think the Bush campaign made a decision not to attack Kerry and to simply stay on message. I also think Bush spending all day in Florida was a good move. The next day the Bush camp was able to promote that by saying bush was tired in the debate from talking to hurricane victims in Florida all day. He's up 5pts in FL, which is huge.

I think he ingnored kerry and concentrated on getting his message across. This is why he reinterated his point on the war being hard work. The implication of course is that they are working hard at it and are making headway.

Some people critize him for repeating himself but I saw it as a plus.

That's the hunch I had while listening to the debate. I felt Bush wanted Kerry to keep on talking!

I have a feeling we might see 250,000 + new jobs created for September.

I hope so. I used to be able to gage things like hiring trends by watching what was happening at my own company in Calif ($2 billion in annual in sales). But no longer. Calif is in the tank. We create our new jobs in other states where we have operations, and where it's much cheaper to do business. But I'm an optimist. If you say 250,000 jobs, I'll join you. Bush needs a break. Some real good news. If we can't produce Usama, I'll take the jobs.

I agree. About the repetition - sadly, at least 50% of the viewing public are idiots, and frequent repetition of key themes, spoken at the 8th grade level, is needed, if you want to get your message heard. Bush, as a person who is more of an exec type than he is a typical politician (e.g. Bush is not a jabbering trial lawyer), fully understands this key principle. And as you have mentioned, Bush played a tight game, stayed on message and never gave Kerry a single scrap to twist out of context. Onward and upward to the bloodbath.

That's what I think Bush did.

The liberals will NEVER learn:

George W. Bush is NOT stupid, no matter how much they wish he was!

I've been thinking the same thing ever since Thursday.

About I worked through the grieving phase of the 1st debate, I finally started
to wonder if Rove whispered into Dubya's ear before he took the podium
"Give him enough rope."

Actually, I am in California as well, as was very happy to see that California unemployment has fallen significantly. We are now at the same level as the nation wide numbers, and nationwide numbers have been on a slow but steady downward trend for at least the past year. 250000 new jobs could easily happen.

I agree with Chindog and others about Bush's sincerity, but nevertheless believe, as many do, that Bush got a lot of ammunition against Kerry out of this debate.

Gotta go. Nice discussion.

If you were listening to what was actually said during the debate -- separating out the stylistic element -- then it seems to me that John Kerry handed GWB enough ammunition to last the rest of the campaign. I was especially aghast at the "global test" statement on Kerry's part. I mean, I know that he thinks this way, but I never thought that he'd come right out & say it. Major gaffe.

Once again we "pajama-wearers" find the true angle that the media elite miss. Another nail in the mainstream media coffin.
