XXXXX DRUDGE REPORT XXXXX SUN OCT 03, 2004 14:05:38 ET XXXXX

DEBATE MYSTERY: DID KERRY HAVE CHEAT SHEET?

Section 5, pages 4-5 of the binding "Memorandum of Understanding" that was negotiated and agreed upon by both political campaigns states:

"No props, notes, charts, diagrams, or other writings or other tangible things may be brought into the debate by either candidate.... Each candidate must submit to the staff of the Commission prior to the debate all such paper and any pens or pencils with which a candidate may wish to take notes during the debate, and the staff or commission will place such paper, pens and pencils on the podium..."

So what did Dem presidential contender John Kerry take out of his jacket as he approached the stage [with his back to the auditorium's audience]?

What did Kerry place on the podium?

Video replays of the Kerry maneuver played all weekend long on the internet.

[A tight zoom of the Boston.Com feed shows Kerry pulling a mysterious "card" from his jacket. 14 seconds into video, after commerical]

A top Kerry campaign source explained to the DRUDGE REPORT late Sunday how Bush supporters were once again trying to distract.

"Kerry did not cheat," said the Kerry insider. "This is more lies from Republicans, who are hoping for a quick change of subject away from the president's performance, and the new polls."

Whole different thing .This is Kerry himself .You really think he'd take a shot like that , on a stage full of cameras and hands ? He'd risk everything he ever did , bring down the ENTIRE Dem (commie ) party in full blown disgrace live on TV in front of the world, risk getting caught with the goods RIGHT IN HIS HANDS!! hoping to God that no one saw him take it backstage and put it in his jacket , hoping to God that no one would see him pull it out at just the right angle to cover it ? Really out there man . He was real prepped and he played Bush and I cant believe Bush allowed him to do that ..I'm still sick over it and at a loss to explain what happened..

Sandy Berger walked out of a government office with classified documents stuffed in his pants. You would think that would have meant total ruin for him, but he's still on the Kerry campaign!

No, didn't see anything that looked like that. Do you know when exactly they said he did it?

Bush was not trying to hide anything.

Who said he was?

Sounds desperate.

Not to denigrate our fine president, but the man's got a set of ears on him, clearly visible during the entire debate, quite possibly from space.(again, I kid.)

There wasn't an earpiece.

It's just more attack the source tactic from the Democrats.

It was some caller on the radio who said that it was at the end of the debate - something like "from Kerry's ear to his pocket"

I just reviewed my tape of the debate. Clearly shows Kerry taking something out of his right coat pocket. Bush is NEVER seen taking any thing out.

I believe the accusation by the dims to be totally false, but then we all knew that anyway. I'm sure FOX can verify this with their tapes as well.

I don't think that there is any if about it, Kerry cheated. It shouldn't really surprise any one, the man is totally bereft of any honor.

I presumed that the picture that you posted showing Bush looking a piece of paper during the debate was meant to indicate that Bush was cheating also. Was I wrong?

George Bush plays by gentlemen's rules. He would never had said such a thing.

OTOH, it was Lehrer's responsibility as moderator to say something to the debaters if there was a rule infringement, and he did not.

Why not?

He should have been watching much more carefully, if he plans to claim he saw nothing happen.

I think someone somewhere posted what should have been done here, and Lehrer should have told the candidate who infringed that it was against the rules of the debate as agreed upon by both teams.

Someone asked on another thread what would be the penalty. I think the penalty would just be to be caught in front of a nationwide audience.

But Lehrer was not going down that road, it seems.

"Does anyone recall who Bush was talking to when he said "Let me finish" during one of his answers?"

I saw it but clearly thought Lehrer was trying to cut him off, no?

Bottom line at the end of the night. Kerry wins because of this. GW was on the defensive all night. Kerry escaped having to defend his record.

And that was true because the moderator controlled the issues and the flow. Did he ask a single question about Kerry's record on national security issues? Or ask Bush what he thought of Kerry's record? I don't remember any such question(s).

The debate rules allowed a paper for notetaking. It was supplied and on the podium. Kerry pulled additional "something" from his pocket and placed it on the podium.

Dems are in damage control and making anything up to take the focus off Kerry cheating.

Sandy Berger walked out of a government office with classified documents stuffed in his pants. You would think that would have meant total ruin for him, but he's still on the Kerry campaign!

Kerry's people spun it as "He was only an informal adviser" - not explaining the "informality" of a person who was set to give a major speech for Kerry at the DNC convention. Also spun was that it was a Republican leak - but that would have occured after the convention.

The press dutifully bought the "informal" line, the lines about "only copies" and such. It was a pre-convetion dump by his own people.

Interestingly, Kerry might not have known about the investigation that had been going on since 2003. Bill Clinton knew about it - what does it say if he didn't warn Kerry?
